Welp the toner market is still bonkers, $900 for a raw common date morgan

Yeah so the Morgan toner market still appears to be strong at least for the bag toners or higher end coins.
This one that recently closed is a lower grade unc 1883 O, common date. The toning is very nice yet it went for $900+ almost a 30x premium compared to a raw untoned example.
Not sure if there's much if any meat left on the bone once this coin gets slabbed, but I just think its crazy that a raw coin can command such a premium.
What are your thoughts on the toner market or this coin in particular? Do you think toners are softening or remaining firm? Considering Aurora Borealis listed several of his coins for sale recently.

That’s some strong money alright. I see this quite frequently. People love their beautiful toned coins.

    $918 for a raw 1883-O Morgan.

    Wicked coin.

Out of my circle of competence.

    Why isn't it slabbed?

At least looking at his store there aren't 25 dupes cooked up in the garage.

Real toning, just not worth sending a $50 coin to PCGS for grading, since it would come back MS63. Being raw probably helped the price - someone probably thinks they are going to score when THEY send it in. Ignorance is bliss.

This one I don't get. I understand the premium for fabulous color. Green is a tough color and this coin has a lot of it. That said, I don't think this coin is technically nice enough or strong enough in the eye appeal department to warrant this premium, especially without better photos. I wonder if this is a case of two nuclear bids coinciding. Slabbed as a 63 or 64 I could see the coin maybe at $500, though I'm still not convinced it's really that impressive. Oh well, not my money, but maybe it means my collection is worth more than I thought.

I've seen other crescent Morgan common date PCGS MS62s sell for over $1500, so it could be worth it on the realized price :)

Popular now, but how long are the legs. The potential for increased pricing is dubious.

In my opinion, the combination of a sharp crescent pattern in the toning with Ms. Liberty emerging into the white field and the color behind her being largely green made this coin quite attractive to a number of folks. Is it "worth" the final bid to me? No, but that is fine, too.

It reminds of Bitcoin. Only time will tell. I will pay a bit of a premium, and sell for a bit of a premium, but they are not rare, unless it is on a rare coin.

I wonder if it has to do with the price guides?

I remember an old toning thread that talked about how green toning brings out the green....and $900 is a LOT of green!

    .
that was my first thought. i'm not saying i'd pay it but $900 seems low for that cool crescent. those are highly sought-after colors on morgans.

the reverse may hold it back but i'd not be surprised to see that in a 65 holder.

Hopefully it comes to our host and we have a stunning true view in our future.

After pondering awhile... $900 for this piece of art is probably a steal.

Unbelievable... to me anyway. I have never, and likely never will, understand paying these premiums for environmental damage... no matter how 'pretty' it looks.... Cheers, RickO

I dislike crescent toning. It is a coin I would not even be interested in owning.
