The pictures look pretty consistent with those of the other coins he sold. And if he were going to do that, he might as well have mentioned the mintmark.

Does anyone really think that the seller would look up the value of this coin and not notice the monstrous price disparity between the New Orleans and Philly/Denver issues? Or, better yet, not research the value at all? Did they just guess at the price to sell for? Never have seen a price guide or searched eBay? Are oblivious to mint marks and rarity? Don't care about getting fair market value for their coin?
I'm having a hard time buying that. Perhaps if the seller had listed it as a "D" mint coin I'd be open to the idea that the party had made a costly mistake based on careless review or poor vision. That's plausible to me. The complete omission of origin leads me to believe that this was intentional. Wouldn't the easiest way to pass along a counterfeit/problem coin be to let the buyer think that he/she was getting a steal?
Mind you, I don't know the seller and am not accusing anyone of anything. These are just the thoughts that come to mind when I see a listing like this. I've been in the hobby 45+ years and definitely know that there is "no Santa Claus in numismatics". When something looks too good to be true . . .
I dont know, maybe seller didnt truly know and just list a 1909 $5 gold. Years ago, I was at a Raleigh coin show, standing out in the lobby waiting for show to open. Guy walks up and asks me if they buy gold coins at the show, i said most likely one of the dealer in there will. I said , what do you have ? Low and behold he pulls out a 1909 Indian, and sure enough its an O. He had no clue what that meant, Probably au-55 or so. i said, man this coin is worth a great deal. at the time, I said about 8-9k. I would have love to have bought it, but didnt really have funds back then. After walking around the show , it was the talk of the hour, herd several dealers saying to each other, hey you hear about the kid with the 09-o ? Im sure one of the dealers ended up getting it that morning.

Well ? Fill the rest of us in.
"O" yeah but for $25... something wrong there.
The seller took a best offer of $465. The starting bid was $25.

IMHO too many odd variable with this listing as not seeing it could be a blessing.
Hi Mark, the 'o' for one thing...Looking at my Indian $5 coin...then the IGWT...that is what really pushed me over...Cheers, RickO
it only took 39 minutes to close, so possibly someone told them
Oh.... forgot to add, the bar across the spear point also...and the mark on the wing...that could be a hit, but could not be sure. Cheers, RickO
Someone got a deal (if the deal went through).
The same seller also had listed (and sold) a 1912 $10 Native-Head Eagle and there was no mention of the "S" mint mark.
The O mintmark looks OK to me, and while I wish the images were better, nothing else about the coin causes me to condemn it as counterfeit.
