    But then I recalled the discovery of the Judd-2020 so-called medium reliefs auctioned a several years ago and noticed that the design details matched. And as @IkesT noted above "It seems like this would be a difficult coin to fake convincingly. It would certainly be difficult for a counterfeiter to get their hands on one in order to copy it."

    Makes me wonder if some of the 3,200 were released and still waiting to be found in circulated condition. Or if it is a one-off situation like the other circ 1922 High Relief and probably tied to an insider who got one and later someone spent it meaning it's unlikely to find any more.

    good commentary and i agree. if there is even but 1 impaired proof at all, odds are there are more out there. (some of the impaired coins known to numismatics now are nothing short of astonishing and that their journey from the mints to commerce, sometimes for an extended time). unless a person has a natural superb attention to detail and/or just spends an inordinate amount of time looking through peace dollars, if there are any more out there, they won't be easy to find, especially if they don't match the high reliefs. those diagnostics are unmistakable, hence my early-on hard position against it being a known high-relief. while the overall look of the 2020 is different enough to get ones' attention, going from getting ones' attention to getting the moxie up enough to send coins out for certification/authentication is a long and arduous journey and can get a bit pricey.

    honestly, i was trying to stir up a technical discussion that never came to fruition with back-end hopes that the owner would come to this thread and we could all hammer it out together. (it has happened a few times in the past) random discoveries, metal detectorists, etc.

    i should have added in that first sentence, disproves it as a high relief. like you, the 2020 didn't occur to me at first but after seeing the OP coin was quite different than the other (known) proof peace, saw it was the only one left that it could be, unless something new but again, the discussion unfortunately never went that direction or at least not far enough.

    i will say there was virtually no way for me to have confirmed it as the 2020 from those images mostly due to my overall lack of specific knowledge to be able to do so (IF it could be confirmed 100% at all from an impaired example from non high-res images) but was hoping for a discussion and/or result. didn't get the first but i guess the latter is the better here.

    most of us enjoy these, especially when they pan out.

    gratz to NGC for getting the job and adding another moose to the woods.

    Wondering if many in this thread are not aware that it came back as the real thing as it's customary to now argue about the grade and CAC status.

    Here is the new reddit thread noting that it is back. Also mentions that their boss at the coin shop was offered $25,000 for it before slabbing and that an "article on the coin should be out soon".

    Good thing for him that he didn't take the $25,000 offer! ;)

    Even as a normal coin, what would it be doing in the cull bucket?

    @braddick

    I was just looking at your peace dollar that you posted on this thread back in March. I agree with you that the mushiness is a red flag, as is the smeared look to the lettering on the reverse (for example, the letters of the word "ONE").

    You were right to pick up on the coin as looking like a high relief, however, as the reverse is the high relief reverse of 1921. Back in the fall, @cmerlo1 posted a thread about a similar 1922 counterfeit peace dollar, which, like yours, has the normal business strike obverse of 1922, but the high relief reverse of 1921.

    I purchased an odd 1922 Peace dollar awhile back and didn't give it much thought. Now after viewing this thread I found it and it gives me pause.
