One of these Morgans has got to go!

I am selling off one of my Morgans to free up cash for a Barber or Seated half. I have pretty much already made up my mind, but I am curious what everyone here has to say. I removed the cert # so you wouldn't be influenced by grade, but they are valued about the same. Guess the grades if you like.

keep this
Would think the CC would be an easier sell with higher demand even if 2 grades lower.
I really like the smooth check on the 98.
I am biased against the color, though keeping a CC is a big plus
I’m a bigger fan of the CC, personally.
Out of the two, I'd keep the CC.
I like #2

Bad transactions with : nobody to date
Save your money for new stuff and keep them both. I like them a lot
I'd keep the 98
Keep the 98, if all you are going on is eye appeal in deciding which to keep
Mr_Spud
I'd keep the !898. The CC is easily replaced.
Yes, hang on to those, find the monies elsewhere if you can.
If they were mine they would both turn into Barber Halves!
I too would keep the 98. So clean. Bummer you can't simply make it work keeping both! That's going to be a difficult decision.

lol, I am trying to convince myself I should just keep both. My best excuse is that every serious collector should have an example of both PL and DMPL, for educational reasons of course....

If keeping it for the Morgan's sake, the 98 O. Much cleaner cheek and overall coin. But, if keeping it for value, the CC.

Naw ... skip the half dollar training wheels and go right to Capped Bust halves!

Umm... sell something else?

Save the 98-O. The lack of marks on Liberty is very appealing. The 83-CC is also nice but will be an easy sell as nice CC's are always in demand.
CC's are nice, no doubt, but that 98-O would be my coin to keep out of those two.
I believe it'd be a lot easier to replace the 83-CC than finding another 98-O that is that cheeky fresh.
Unless you are doing Overton Varieties, a set of nice Barber Halves is tougher and more expensive than a Capped Bust Half Set!
As to the Morgan Dollars posted, I wouldn't be surprised if the POP in the single grade each coin is in exceeds the total Population of all dates and grades of the entire Barber Half series!
Of course ... why would you not collect Overton varieties? Oh ... yeah ... maybe cuz ya spent too much money on Barber halves and nobody will buy them!

Over a million in sales says otherwise!
1883 - MS63 PL
1898 - MS65 PL
I like the 98.
I'd keep the CC

@astrorat If that LOL is because you don't believe me, I assure you it is. That is just the certified coins I have sold since I started tracking them on a spread sheet. Go back 10 years and add in my raw sales and you can double that figure!
Why sell either?

I am trying to do a box of 50 type set sort of thing. Don't have much room for expensive dups. Plus there are a bunch of coins I still need/want.
Tough choice. Both are nice coins. The particulars are already covered by previous posts.
I'd keep the 98-O, as her cheek is nicer and the coin is likely a higher grade. That said, there is a magic about that CC mintmark - which makes the choice hard.
Well the good news is that you will still have an excellent coin after you sell one, I would keep the CC simply because I like those double mm coins.

I like the CC. It's a trade off with marks but I do love the die cracks on it.

If they were mine, I'd keep the 98 and dump the 83. The 98 would be more like what i collect. As far as grade, I'm not sure it really matters, I've seen some MS 65's with more bags marks than the loser in a demolition derby lately. Guess bag marks and scars don't count, but they do to me! I'd rather have a clean MS63 than a heavy bag marked or scarred MS65. Just me!
I had an 1883 just like that. Id guess this one is 65dmpl. The 98 id guess is 65+ or 66 PL.
98 Looks cleaner technically but since my birth year is 1983 I like the 83. Also love the contrast on it.

Easy to find a CC like that, I'd guess not so much on the O.
I also like the full cam of the O, those CC usually have that patch where the jawline meets the neck with the different surface finish.
Tough choice. I would keep the 1898-O.
Least facial scars wins!
LOL ... don't be so sensitive. I was just teasing you. Whether you sell $100 a year or $100 million a year, it doesn't matter to me. It was a joke. My apologies and I'll try to be more careful in the future.
Edited to add ... sorry to the rest of the Board for the sidebar discussion ... let's move it to PMs, if necessary.

I'd keep the 1898-O, because it's in better condition and the 1883-CC, despite it's 'mystique', would still be easy to replace.

The '98 is the more attractive coin... but the CC is also nice. The decision is easy for me... keep them both.. since I do not sell coins.
Cheers, RickO
To be honest I like them both
Which do you like better and which is the best fit for your collection? Since you asked, for me it is an easy decision. I would rather have the 98-O. That coin with the look it has will be far more challenging to replace with a comparable example. The CC is nice but that date can be found nice without much effort. Best of luck in your collecting efforts

Here are the auction pics of the two coins:
I am going to keep the 1883 CC DMPL. I love the 1898 O, but the mirrors on the CC put it to shame. It's not even really close. Ultimately I would want to upgrade the 1883 to a DMPL 66 or 66+, preferably with a CC mint mark as well. Thanks for all the insights!
i still like the second one. its all good
Keep the 1898-o. Go to any large show and you can find 83-cc and fill a garbage bag
with your finds. The 98-o is far and away the better coin and much more difficult to
replace if at all. With these two coins , it's not about the mirrors, it's about the overall
look and rarity.
Oh man, I might have to keep them both now. I think, deep down, I was hoping you all would convince me not to sell the 98-O when I created this post.
Oh wow i was so close!
