RPM or maybe just misaligned? 1988 D 10c

KurisuKurisu Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭✭✭

Having a tough time telling on this one... I know there are RPMs for the 1988 D
I'll get a shot from the scope if it helps.
Took a shot through the loupe...

There are only two listed on VV and this is not a match for either, Looks like die deterioration to my eyes.

    My Lincoln Registry
    My Collection of Old Holders

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.

Looks like mintmark was unevenly applied. One side much heavier than the other side.

Or the die was unevenly polished....

Thanks all! My first guess was the mint mark was placed at an angle/misaligned...just wanted to confirm it wasn't a wacky rpm.
    Much appreciated

It does look like a 'slanted' impression on the master, but there would be others if that were the case. I would lean toward die erosion....Cheers, RickO

i know it is a bit difficult to get quality pics through a loupe but could you post that MM from a couple different angles? that image makes it look like it has been repunched. thanks

Here you go, a few more in better lighting through the good loupe...What I know for sure now, is I should get a better microscope lol! I have one of those cheapy ones, useless.

nah. do it right and look around the threads here about nice cameras.

for as much as some people are spending on the digi scopes and whatnot, they could easily put a big dent into doing it right and getting a copy stand (not and expensive one) and a nice macro lens and some type of dslr or the like. haven't checked into the quality or pricing of the mirrorless these days but i've used many different things and for indoor and usually outdoor macro photography, dslr and similar, accept no substitute. :)

    OR

use a iphone 6 ($40-60) or similar or newer generation plus a decent loupe. getting the light right is the same all the way across the board for ANY numis photography. there are also loupe attachments that can fit onto the phones. they've been around for years.

appreciate the images but they just can't get me there. if you already were into sending these things off, i'd say do it just for the heck of it bcoz the cost is so low but you gotta really be into discoveries for that. if not, just sit on the coin until better image taking is available.

i'll post some images here to encourage you that i took with my iphone 6s and cheap-o loupe, once i find some to do so. :)

Not to throw a wrench into the conversation, but the surface really turns me off.
The others are more knowledgeable on the RPM as I'm not.
But the close up, which really tells, raises a flag and my question.
I just would like to know this if you could.
    The surface pattern ?

The reason I want a dedicated scope is because I do in fact have professional Canon equipment and I keep it available for shooting...my degree is actually in Commercial Photography believe it or not lol! From the days of emulsion originally. You might have noticed that I've jumped into a couple of the threads about cameras and technical stuff...I know too much lol!

I use a T6i currently and have a few lenses to choose from but I don't want to go back and forth from the Pelican case to a stand. I'm very photo journalist that way and I still do a lot of shooting.

I have a tripod holder for my phone so that I can mount it when needed and it's a nice new Galaxy, it's what I use for my other coin shots usually, just due to the convenience of it.

Agreed, if you look at the top of the thread you'll see it's a very circulated dime and these photos I just posted were taken in direct sunlight...so you'll see that sort of pattern on any coin, even proofs, if you shoot extreme close ups in direct sunlight since the contrast is basically maxed out by the single direction ultra bright light....I was deliberately trying to bring out some extra detail for @LanceNewmanOCC without using my junky scope

You might appreciate this too... the loupe I'm using is actually called a focusing loupe. It's designed to sit flat on photo paper in a dark room for focusing the image when making emulsion type prints...bought it for college...Extremely high quality, was not cheap! Cost almost as much as one of my Canon A1 lenses at the time (1992)!

I do understand that process, lol.
    Photo's are spot on.
One thing I've noticed, if you tilt the coin sometimes, I think the camera gives a false positive.
Just my thoughts are if its not in view straight up (flat) from any angle that's 75% lost.
Now if the coin was struck unevenly? I don't know, but could be a new game plan.
    Thanks for the reply.
