Mannie,
After reading all the responses,
What kind of dip do have.
And though, its out of my field, but what are you going to serve with the dip.
This read got me salivating.

Common coin, uncommonly grimy.
Rock tumble and pocket carry another 62 points away from the surfaces, get it recertified, and you'll have an even more collectible item for the advanced specialist
Not sure what to do with it, but I like it and am glad I got it.
The question I have is if you wanted to conserve and improve the look of the Peace $, what product(s) and process would you use to remove those black spots. Aren't they etched into the coin in some spots?
I know it's tough looking at this Peace dollar for too long, yet please indulge me. Those straight lines that run across the obverse rim. See them? What are those all about?
As one dealer told me, it looks like it could turn in the holder making it basically worthless. I'd overnight it to the grading service and get them to conserve it no matter how much that cost, run it express service just to be sure the problem is addressed pronto!
If you paid 50-75$ it’s probably ok to live with the looks but if you paid more than 100$ you need to rethink before you buy. It’s not attractive toning....most Peace collectors like the blast whites....me included. I did venture out and purchased a toner last month for 360$.....it was a Col. Green NGC 🙃

I got to drinking a few beers and thought man she don't look so bad underneath. I left early this morning
Seriously though a dip would prolly remove Barneys greasy fingerprints. Those lines are interesting because they run exactly parallel but do not touch anywhere except the rim.
This $ from a mint pack has a similar issue as does another from CoinFacts.
I like the coin but I'm not crazy about the toning (& I usually like toned coins). It has personality though this one looks contagious & should be quarantined!!
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

100% original and undipped, not that bad a $45 or so coin. Was kept somewhere where it picked up dark surface matter. But just another argument to let the grading services do a quick dip on coins needed it before being entombed. I wish submission invoices had a box to check for $5 dips as needed in the eyes of graders.
I am doubtful that all of what is on the surfaces can be removed with a dip. And even if the so-called distraction were removed, you would then have coin that looks like 100,000 others. As for your follow up question, I would not venture a guess. I will say that if it is rim filing or some type of PMD, I doubt that it would have straight graded.

Looks like it’s pretty much unanimously considered “ugly”. But at the right price, I would have bought it too.

I love it with that steal silver look but as a common date you can find one you live more. No downside if you buy it right

I love Peace dollars.
I do not like that one, Sam I am.
Quite very ugly but I sure do not want to hurt your feelings.
Edited to say-Nothing a good bath of ms-70 wouldn’t fix😊

It’s original!
This is a $60 coin with $21 worth of silver in it. What do you have to lose? Dip it.

Just remember.... This type of ugly can be removed....

I think the technical grade is correct, but the eye appeal is negative in my opinion.
Not all coins are pretty.
Still a nice coin.
BARF. idc if it's in a NGC or pcgs slab, its still negative eye appeal. SORRY!
