Divorce and Collection - Value?

Difficult time at home. One point that needs to go on our financial sheet is value of the collection. Is there someone private that can do a verified appraisal? I'd like it to be at the real buy price - not just an EBAY fantasy. it's a "fairly" deep collection (unopened, graded cards, etc)
Anyone to contact to do this? Has to be a third party (I can't do it, etc)
Thanks!
(And no, my collecting didn't CAUSE the divorce)

this board is a great wealth of knowledge on a variety of topics. this may be one of those scenarios that it's best not to take advice from strangers on the internet. would just say to do your due diligence very carefully. and sorry to hear, for what it's worth.
Sorry to hear. What exactly is required of the 3rd party? Do you have a local store where the owner could vouge for your estimates? I would think most current values can be obtained from ebay recent sale prices, it sounds like you just need a third party to do that for you.

I'm always saddened by this kind of news.
What state do you reside?
I'm in CT. It'll work out ok - thanks for your wishes. I'm really just wondering who you would trust to value your collection? For me, I'd almost like to tell Steve - give me a BUY IT price - and it's possible we do just sell it. In the end though, I want to know what half the price of the collection is so I can buy off that portion and keep it.
Thanks for your wishes - in this case, we are progressing nicely and things are going to be ok.

With prices going up so quickly, I would try to get this done as soon as possible. If you wait another month or two, it'll likely be worth much more. Sorry to hear.
Sorry to hear what you are going through. I am also in CT and I know that Ken's Cards in Kensington offers appraisals. Not sure where in CT you are in but Kensington is a part of Berlin and in the middle of the state.
PSA sends out emails with a guys name that does appraisals. Probably somewhere on their site or in the PSA news.
Funny - I was just going to Kens this afternoon to look around. It'll be my first visit there - I'll ask. Thanks!

Don’t forget any “gifts” are all yours. Maybe offer a trade - jewelry for the cards.
Not mine it's my brothers cards. I just keep to here for safety reasons. Or he gave me this card and this card and this card all gifts. How hard can it be to hide some of them from that sheet. But again this is a public forum best ask your lawyer.
I mean depending on what caused the divorce I can see many reasons to play stupid about your cards and just send them to a friends house till all this blows over.
Look at it this way now you will be free and can start over with your hobbies and a new place to live in 100% peace. No need to have a little room in the entire home as your ''man cave''. Enjoy the whole home. I know it is sad but there are plenty of benefits of being single in life. Personally I am done with all that will stay single and to me is the best of the best. Takes time but you will get use to it.
Women's best friend = Diamond or some other garbage
Man's best friend = dog or any pet and fun hobbies
Think about that you will find peace.
What cards? Oh, that Babe Ruth card. It's worth $1.

There is no need to man up in this case do what is best for you best believe she will be doing the exact same.
My wife is very aware of what is going on with the values of the cards I own. His might be too.
If that is the case lesson learned. Best to keep some things to yourself in life. Have a safety deposit box in your name you have the right to have some private stuff in your life. Having a little ninja side never hurts. And also a exit strategy in place also can't hurt.
I will marry a women the day I find one that makes me laugh and I mean real laughter. After 40 years not a single one has been able to do that. One night out with the guys and we can laugh for hours. The day I realized that I knew single life was the only cure to all the madness.
Anyways good luck. Lick your wounds and move on. I see people dwell and dwell for decades it's no life just let it be and move on.
It sounds like the process is going well for @nendee in spite of the divorce. Let's leave the divorce strategy out of the thread. No one here knows the reason for the split. Answer his question, offer condolences, but otherwise please spare the man the "nasty woman" input.
Sorry about that just wanted him to understand some times life is better lived alone. Most divorces are nasty and each side should think 100% about themselves first and foremost. Not saying his is maybe he will be one of the lucky ones.
Sorry and hope all works out with you.
If what you have is on the psa set registry then when you click on inventory it will give you a total value.
Since I use the registry for inventory control......buy, $, date and source I have a total for my cost.
Then there is a psa generated total. This is probably based on SMR but a good starting point

Afternoon,
Went through this in 2012-13. Fortunately we were/are still friends.
That said, even with the best efforts that we could put into determining the Actual Street value of everything I had accumulated over the years. With cards values in 300K and Comics in 300-500K range, Rare Books 100K, there was way too much variables that could be argued with and discussed over and over ad nauseum. Even after I paid a Card Shop Owner and a Comic Book Store Owner/Friend to give us a rough and tuff, it was way off what we had said it was worth.
So we made the decision to just sell everything. (There were of course other factors, Losing my A$$ on two Rental Properties, being one). And after it was all said and done, I made twice as much as the Appraisal!
So FWW.
YeeHaw!
Neil
You could use the PSA Price Guide for even say the top 25% of your collection...could use a 3, 6, 9 range of values to get a good estimate.

A wife is with you for as long as your married. But, an ex-wife is FOREVER !!!!!!! What's hers is hers, and what's yours is hers. Good luck.
I have noticed most friends women have are a bunch of ex's. Maybe that is how they make friends. Nothing personal to your story just life in general. I guess some get along for my part forget it once we are done we are done for life.
Give her all of your "valuable" 1988 topps cards and quietly hide or dispose of the rest.
Any cards before marriage she is not entitled to. Any cards that came as gifts from parents or friends she is not entitled to.
Get letters from friends or family that gifted you cards.
You can not produce receipts from card shows because they were not usually given.
Be willing to help her out as much as possible, but don’t give stuff away that by law you are protected by.
All the best.
The Appraisal Offices of Dave advise just to stall til 2024.
Lol. Yes, I am looking forward to peace - being alone sounds wonderful!
I’m really hoping to trade home equity for the collection. I loved the idea of - you keep these 100 1988 Topps and I’ll keep this 1 old PSA 8 Gretzky rookie.
I’m happy to do what’s fair, hoping she sees this is my passion and we just fairly find a number. I’m looking into the PSA appraisal, etc. there is just so much.
I also thought about saying - hey, it’s probably worth 200k. After it’s all said and done, selling, the time, it’s probably 100k net. I’ll pay you 50k for it. (As an example)

Kinda glad now that I sold my PSA 9 Jordan 6 years ago for 3k....lol

give her a couple of '90 fleer uribes. plenty of historic sales there! 😉
you might even get to keep the house if they're mint.
(saying all in good humor for smiles)
I hope this works out well for you. It must be a really difficult time

For the unopened, I would create a spreadsheet using BBCE's buy pages: https://www.bbcexchange.com/buying-baseball
I realize you said it can't be you to estimate the value, but it might be hard to find someone to appraise it for free.
Good luck, I'm sorry you're going through this.
Sorry to hear.......In anticipation of this possibly happening to me at some point, I've kept my wife in the dark about almost everything related to the value of my stuff. In the Dark, just like Billy Squier said
I'm sorry to hear...good luck with everything.
I've been thru it. The challenge is getting to the post nuptial.
How about using SMR. In today’s market you’ll be more than advantaged and its 3rd party info you can point to.
