J C Davis stamped 1854 half dollar

Hi. I am new to this and not really a collector anymore but I have some coins and currency I inherited and am interested in finding out a little about them and what they may be worth. The first is an 1854 seated Liberty half dollar with J C Davis stamped on it. Is this anything special or just a defaced coin?

@porchdawg welcome to the learning place. Posting close sharp pics of both sides of a coin and you shall receive valuable input from experienced collectors. In my opinion. Peace Roy

If it is all one stamp (and not one letter at a time) there is a chance others exist and it might even increase the value of the coin.
J.C. DAVIS is a known counterstamp and is cataloged as Brunk D-137. It's found struck on quarters, half dollars and an Argentina 1836 eight reales. I have handles two examples, both on Seated half dollars. It has not been attributed to a person or location as without additional information it is too common of a name for general research.
@porchdawg.... Welcome aboard.... Pictures would really help the experts to further advise you.... Good luck, Cheers, RickO
okay

Here are pictures of the coin. Any collectors interested in this type of stamp?
Yes, there are some people who collect counterstamped coins.
That is why Brunk's book exists.
A lot of 4 counterstamped quarters, one with J.C. Davis, sold for $150 in January of last year on Heritage.
