New Gold Coin 1872 5.00 PCGS AU-55 CAC

semikeycollectorsemikeycollector Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭✭✭

I feel very lucky to have found this $5 Gold piece. I've been studying 2.50 thru 10.00 during the pandemic. Looking for something very scarce, but nice. Much of what I've learned was from Doug Winter's website.

The 1872 has 31 total graded at PCGS and 28 at NGC. There are 5 CACs. Mintage 1660.

Neat coin. I really like the $5 Libs.

Great look. No major distracting marks. Seems like a wholesome, attractive example of an undervalued date. If you bought it out of the DLRC auction, I think you did very well.

Affordable low mintage, few survivors and gold. I like that way of collecting.

Semikey- Nice pick up. So many tough coins in the $5 lib series. Congrats..... Are you done with Seated Dollars or are you just expanding?

Nice gold coin and looks properly graded. Gold coins can be addicting.... I know from experience. ;) Cheers, RickO

A nice lower mintage $5 Liberty. An AU55 grade seems high to me. I would grade it as AU50.

    Hi Breakdown,
It was from from DLRC! I paid a bit more than the auction last year for it, but felt it was worth it.

    Hey Crusty,

I ended up selling off my 1855 and 1856 dollars to get this one. I still have the 1854 and 1871-cc. I may sell them for scarce gold like this. For the Seated Dollars, I only wanted the 1857 and 1861 thru 1863 and then I would have been done ... and then the gold bug hit.

I have pretty limited funds, so will end up with just a hand full of gold coins anyway. Will likely start to sell most things off in 10 years, when I reach my early 70's (hopefully) so family has cash instead of coins. So just enjoying different types of coins. It's feels strange to consider and end game. Would still have some coins, when older just less.

I may even sell of my completed Seated Dime set, in a few years to make more purchases.

    Thanks for asking!

    Hi 291fifth,

Your grading assessment is an interesting opinion. The strike on her hair is not full, also some AU55 coins have more flash. One interesting thing that I've learned is due to the low mintage, the protected areas are prooflike as opposed to flashy, Honestly I'm new to gold, have a lot to learn.

What some readers may have glossed over is exactly what you said - those figures are for ALL GRADES COMBINED of the 1872 Half Eagle, NOT data for just those graded AU55.

Fantastic pickup! So very typical that only a low percentage (less than 10%) merit a CAC. You’d figure at this price point, combined with the pricing differential for those with CAC’s vs. those without CAC’s, that most of the others have already been submitted to CAC.

Congratulations! Quite a VERY special coin!

That’s an old friend of mine and the coin looks much better in hand than the pictures with nice proof like surfaces. Congrats!

Thank you Winesteven! I evaluated 100's of gold coins in the past months and was looking a coin with these types of numbers. I agree with what you say about CAC. That was icing on the cake, but going forward will see it as a lot more than icing.

I think you're correct about the protected areas looking proof like, that characteristic probably doesn't disappear until after several thousand strikes. I have a MS53 that looks very similar in the protected areas.

Your coin is definitely a keeper, I like it a lot. The $5 Liberty is my favorite series and can be very addictive. It was minted for 70 years and is the only series minted at all 7 classic US mints. Lots of different ways to collect the series.

Great coin! It sounds like your moving in an exciting direction for your collection. As for the grade, CAC is super tough on coins like this---if it is stickered it is highly unlikely that it is overgraded. Congrats on the coin.

I can say, without question, I find your new gold piece very attractive and for the grade I also just love the surfaces, especially on the reverse.
    Very well done👍👍

Wow. Owning a circulated coin with just 1660 minted. I think this is cool by itself despite one that has the eye appeal represented and referenced. Good for you!

I agree with this assessment. But JA seems to know more than all of us combined.
Still a nice looking coin given how scarce they are without issues.

My pictures which don’t really capture the beauty of the coin but more accurately depict the coin than DL’s.

Thank you! I love these pictures. Do not have the coin in hand yet, but using your pictures to do a presentation at my local coin club by Zoom. I am very excited to receive this coin and thank you for enhancing this whole experience!
