Has anyone done any research on the obvious connection between the Mexican 8 Reales of the First Republic and Christian Gobrecht's celebration of the first U.S. steam coinage?

@AngryDragon .... Welcome aboard. I have no information regarding your question, however, there are many members who research such things, so you may have an answer soon. Cheers, RickO
You mean that both used The Phrygian cap in those designs? Its a symbol of freedom.

Probably the Phrygian cap inside the rays.
I haven't seen any research on this but they are clearly related.
I would be useful to know when the Mexican Peso first started using this design and who the designer was. The one you posted is from 1868, or 30 years after the first steam press medal.
Mexico used the design since 1823. I'm sure there are earlier patterns. @pruebas and @Abuelo know way more about these than I.

As I recall, the design was influenced by Mexican coinage, and was used on gold dollar patterns for that year as well. The conflicts with Mexico in 1836 were part of the reason the design was not officially adopted.

From Stacks auction:
The Liberty Cap motif is one of the favorite Bolen dies. The symbol has a rich numismatic history that has antecedents on circulating Mexican coinage and the 1836 March 23 Mint medal for the steam press launch, as well as a pattern gold dollar of that year, both by Christian Gobrecht.

Zoins, I had wanted to use an eight reales from 1836 but I liked this one so much I ended up using it instead. I knew that someone would realize that the Mexican design dated back to 1823 so I didn't think it would much matter. It was the use of both the cap and the rays in these designs that caused me to make the connection.
Take a look @TwoKopeiki it is a copyright violation...
This Guanajuato coin is nearly identical.
