Some of these coined in 1893 have an 1892 date. I thought the 1892 had a higher mintage-

A quick look in my Red Book (and seeing a .5 in the writing) makes me pretty sure he's talking about dollars worth.
RB shows a 1892 mintage of 950k (twice the stated amount).
For 1893, though, it shows 1,550,405. RB also says that many were unsold and later released for circulation at face value or melted.
Mintage vs Distribution. Really neat artifact.

Yes. The copied note clearly shows a dollar sign in front of the 475,000.

Curious that the 1892 figure does not show any assay coins and the 1893 figure does.

@CaptHenway you're absolutely right. I dismissed the $ as something else and didn't recognize it as such. oops.

I really like seeing these old letters. Interesting how the formal verbiage has changed - as well as the structured formality. Cheers, RickO

McClure must have been an underling. Robert E Preston was Director of the Mint from November 1893 until February 1898. Apparently, they screened the Director's mail so he wouldn't be bothered with trivial matters. Still, it's an interesting artifact.

There were a lot of McClure's in that area, Schools and Buildings named after them but I have not found a McClure that worked at the US Mint in that time frame.
