Coin Collection

I've just come into a coin collection. Does anyone know the easiest and most profitable way to sell these? What websites are best? I'm looking for alternatives to ebay and esty

welcome
it depends on the quality of stuff you have.
here is one person's recent journey. what was finally done was to find a local coin club and get in person advice before sale to a local coin store.

In general, the amount of time, effort and resources you put into understanding and selling the collection is correlated with the more amount of money you will realize from the sale.

Handle all coins by the edges.
Don't even think about cleaning or brushing them off.
1.You may have an accumulation that's only worth the value of the silver content or the face value of the coins.
2. Or,
If there are valuable coins there one thumbprint or cleaning can cost you a bunch.

If you post some pictures it would be helpful. There are some very smart people here. A few good photos will give everyone a good idea of what you have, and how you might proceed in selling.
Totally agree with @MsMorrisine and @TomB. Good advice and I can't think of anything to add. If you read what they have said and follow the advice you should do well. Also, @Swampboy's advice about protecting you coins is very good.
If you want some specific advice from the many experienced people here, why don't you make a follow-up post with some details. Are the coins in collections, as in folders of different dates of the same kind of coins? Or are they graded and in holders? The more details the better. And they lots of photos. This will get you going. And the best of luck to you.
You could start by telling us what is in the collection and post some pics. We can get a general idea of what you are dealing with and give advice based upon that.
Collector, occasional seller
Thank you everyone. I definitely plan to have these valued at some stage but am also in no rush. I've been researching around and Ebay & Etsy look to be the most commonly used platforms for buying & selling. Is anyone aware of smaller platforms that take less commission?
Without an image it'll be hard for anyone to give you their best advice on disposing of and getting the most for the coins.
Throw 'em all on a table and grab a pic. Then you'll get some good advice I'm thinking
edit to say.
If you're intent on valuing the coins yourself based on your research be aware that even experienced collectors can over value a coin by a point or two.
If you are new to coins you could be disappointed with an initial self-valuation.
Best of luck👍

BST on this site. But again, you'll need pictures. The higher the quality AND quantity of pictures, the better you'll do.
Post some pics here so people can tell you what you got.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.in general you're looking at ebay ... or you could sell direct here: https://forums.collectors.com/categories/buy-sell-trade-u-s-coins and here: https://forums.collectors.com/categories/world-ancient-coins-forum-buy-sell-trade and here: https://forums.collectors.com/categories/buy-sell-trade-currency
keep in mind that new people selling here should get recommendations of those here in the circle of trust; and, then plan to ship before payment is sent.
outside of taking it to a coin store to sell, you will need pictures.
you could have gems and you could have rocks. good pictures will say a lot.
feel free to post tons of pictures to this thread and you can then get feedback on them.
If you want eyeballs, you have to pay for the eyeballs.
The bigger issue is what you have. If you know nothing about coins, selling on any venue is fraught with peril. When you list a rare VAM for $50 when it is worth $500, you might be happy with the $50 and never realize it was worth $500.
Some things aren't worth retailing yourself. For example, if you have a bunch of bullion, it is generally more efficient to just wholesale it as bullion as the bid/ask spread is tiny. If you have a truly rare coin, you want to go to a major auction house even though they will take far MORE than eBay as they will properly catalogue it and maximize the return.
Many collections, frankly, aren't worth your time unless your time is free. If you have a collection of common material that is worth $1500 retail, you might be able to get $1000 wholesale or spend 500 hours of your time to get $1500 retail. That's $1 per hour for your time.
It is really impossible to advise without some idea of what kind of material you might have.
Buy a copy of the current edition of "A Guide Book of United States Coins" (the Red Book) and read it cover to cover before doing anything more. This is a standard guide for US coins.
Follow the various treads on this website. You will learn a lot by doing so. Don't be in a big hurry to sell.
Oops! THREADS not treads.
