Rant - Sigh I don't know. MS coins from circulation taken back to the bank

Clackamas1Clackamas1 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't use credit cards or even debit cards. Cash only. Anyway over the last 5 years, I pull out of circulation coins that are fresh from mint rolls, when I get them home I grade them and stick them in cabinet. Well my wife wanted to clean up the cabinet and literally took all of those coins and brought them with my jar (she is free to take it) to the bank. I had like 5 W MS quarters tones of super high end everything modern for the last 5 years. I should have made it more clear - this is my space - you don't touch it - actually I did say that years ago but she forgot. sigh. I had a few coins that would probably be top pops in the mix.

Anything really special should have been in 2x2s or other cases that she would not have been able to cash in as-is.

Also, no offense intended, but I would be shocked if you were pulling "top pops" from circulation. If you find any more pls post a few pics.

But, of course, your situation stinks. Sorry to hear about it.

I agree I should have more careful. Top pops from moderns all come from rolls. I can assure you I am not blowing sunshine. I have made many a top pop from 1934-2008.

You don't know me. Top pops from moderns all come from rolls. I can assure you I am not blowing sunshine.

That might well be the case, but if so, why wasn't any of your stuff packaged (holders, cases, slabs, etc,) in such a way that she would have known they were special?

Also, I always thought many/most top examples of moderns came out of mint sets.

Those are just my random thoughts. Until we see some photos of your next "top pops " we won't be able to fully appreciate your grading skills. :)

"Top Pops" only exist when they are in major brand slabs. If your coins were raw moderns all you really had was face value until you stepped up and paid the slabbing fees for "opinions" that create the value in such coins.

    All glory is fleeting.

Gosh to be honest I have been out of the game so long. I thought all mint set coins were still all satin finish and not true circ strikes. That was the case for most of the 2000's. Maybe that has changed. Either way I can grade a circ strike like few can - I will admit as we age the luster fades.

I know I have a few under my belt. here is one of the sets. probably the hardest to do with circ strikes with moderns. I made the the vast majority of those coins I made 3 of the 4 the top D Sacs - but had to sell them. https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/u-s-coins/mint-sets/2006-mint-set-circulation-strikes/alltimeset/84272

The real loss in value are the W quarters. I would be annoyed if my woman did that too.

Wifey knows NOT to mess with my coins or firearms. Heck she can have my wallet, cell phone or anything else. Just not my coins or guns. ( both kept in safes, yes she has the combinations. )

Its always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. I would agree on making the "keepers" harder to spend; 2x2's capsules, etc...

The joy of leaving things out in the open.

Reminds me of when my brother cut open my dads 1964 Mint sets to buy some candy and Wacky Packages stickers at the corner White Hen Pantry (yes back in 1972). I think he used 2 or 3 of the sets. I inherited the other 6 survivors years later.

I don't know why you would have your coins in a place where your wife is free to grab them and take them to the bank. But at least you did not loose any money on them.

Penny, nickel, dime, quarter, half, dollar, no matter. Anytime I find a MS coin in circulation that in my opinion is special and worthy of saving, it goes into a safelip and is then heat sealed. I did this with a few, a very few, presidential dollars I pulled from rolls a few years ago. Maybe I've got some pop tops and don't realize it.

Tough situation.... However, keeping quality coins loose or in a jar does nothing to preserve the quality... In fact, leaves them susceptible to damage - or, in your case, going to the bank. :'( Some really nice coins in the set you linked - well done. Cheers, RickO

  • Reminds me of when my Mom called my brothers and said she was cleaning the attic. Come get anything you want. They said there wasn't anything. They forgot about two boxes of baseball cards that included Willie Mays, Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial rookie year cards, among many others. Mom warned them!

That said, would someone help me with the slang terms? I am an admittedly naïve novice and don't know this stuff:
To whit: What are "top pops" and "moderns"?

  • thebeavthebeav Posts: 3,732 ✭✭✭✭✭

top pop- the highest graded example of a particular issue.
modern- generally anything after 1965 !
