Here's a light fingerprint I can live with.

It doesn't stand out in hand like it does in the picture and I view it as a testament to it's original surfaces.

    Somehow, I don't think I would even care on a 1901-S.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but why can't a coin be fingerprinted subsequent to having been cleaned?

Still a nice coin and IMO that latent is as old as the coin. Peace Roy

Are you certain that is a fingerprint/palm print? I ask because it reminds me of some of the marks found on coins when they have been in paper albums that have gotten moist. Like those blue paper Whitman albums if stored in a basement.

    Agree. Or a wallet etc.

I think you are correct. Fingerprint was how the coin was sold to me. They do have the same charactoristics but that wouldda been a huge thumb or finger to cover this coin the way it did!

Regardless, I don't think it looks like a fingerprint which would drive me crazy. I feel it is very acceptable. JMO

That doesn't look like a fingerprint to me but now that I have seen it, I cannot unsee it. Not something I would typically purchase.

In hand you don't hardly see it. Of course my eyes are getting older! All I can say is find another one! ;)

I also thought that given how straight and long the markings are across the neck, it’s probably not a fingerprint ... 🤓

Most fingerprints curl well before these do. I've never seen any straight prints.

Lines are too straight to be a print.

I agree, it is not a fingerprint... looks like some type of contact mark such as @TomB stated. Certainly detracts from what otherwise is a very nice coin. Cheers, RickO

It blends in with the coin until you magnify it!

It's a good looking coin. However, lines or not, I would not assume this type of totally flat toning to be original. Especially if there is a glossy look to the high points.

  • jedmjedm Posts: 3,120 ✭✭✭✭✭

Call me crazy but I'd rather have that coin than a new car right now. I don't find the pattern distracting at all really. :)

I don't like fingerprints and that one is prominent.

However, it is a nice, collector-grade, key date, so that makes up for a lot.

It's respectable example, until a better one comes along.
