The Indian Head was hit with a nailset on a slightly soft surface.
ANA 50 year/Life Member (now "Emeritus")

Crimp the staples on the 2x2s. It's only a matter of time before you scratch a coin. Hopefully, it won't be an expensive one

It will help tremendously to visualize what happened to the coins to make them look that way. The forces, objects, and surfaces involved.
There is no part of the minting process that could leave that effect as an error.
