Hi guy's, yeah I picked up this Franklin PCGS Rattler. 1950d MS 64. Possible RPM? Have to examine closer with my scope. Didn't buy it for the possible RPM, bought it for the aspect of the coin being in the old school holder. Plus, the coin isn't too difficult to look at as well. Sure, NO FBL but I still love the coin. And an actual coin in my possession without a tone! Lol. Maybe, later I'll consider to send in to our Host for a possible upgrade? Who knows? Could not only turn into a MS 65, but also a FBL? :*

I think its graded correctly and I don't see an FBL or one of the two RPM's for this date in those photos. But I do see a very nice half in a cool holder.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they designated FBL on rattler holders.
I think the marks above the date would keep it from a 65 holder, otherwise it's a dang nice looking half!

Thanks guy's. I forgot to mention the other reason I purchased it. The PRICE. She only charged me $39! PCGS price Guide has the coin priced at $60, in the ms 64 grade. :)

I've made some money (rare for me in the coin business) finding undesignated FBL's in Rattler holders.(not implying yours is)

Sure, you're right about price guides. But old school Rattlers, should carry a higher premium, no? :*

Nice coin & nice holder! :)

Bye bye nice holder and any premium. Then you have a common coin in a common holder. :/

I love the Rattlers, don't get me wrong. But if I had to choose whether I can receive a upgrade/FBL designation, I would definitely much rather have the latter. Esp. the upgrade. :)

    To each their own. :)
It's your coin and you should do what you like. :)

FYI... Just last week I sold a coin on ebay that I got $100 more than the grade should have brought all because of a rattler. ;)

Oh? Are the old "Rattlers " that much valuable? Wow. I really didn't realize that. Thanks for the info. Of course, if I did decide to send it in, I'd tell PCGS to only take the coin out of the holder if in fact, it did upgrade. ;)

Your original post describes how you may crack it out in hopes of a higher grade. Even if you did so and it came back as an MS65 (FBL or not), you are out as the expense to do so coupled with the coin's cost makes it not worth it.
Enjoy it as an MS64 in a rattler slab and don't play with it (grading game). Therein lies the true value.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the holder adds $100 on your coin today.
Your holder looks to be in great shape and not all scratched up. :)
As more people crack these out it's hard to say future value.
The holders that are in the best shape will bring the most in the future.
I will always buy a rattler over a standard holder and usually they sell for a premium over a standard holder.

It's a nice coin & nice holder, glad to see you buying something like this rather than raw common coins. Congrats! :)

It's a nice looking 64 but the marks in the field in front of Franklin's will prevent it from going any higher. I can't tell if it has full bell lines or not from the photo. You will probably be best off by just leaving it in the rattler holder. Think of what it would cost to have that coin regraded/reslabbed and then think of what you paid for it as is.

    All glory is fleeting.

That is an attractive Franklin in a nice old slab. I do not see an RPM, nor FBL.... Not worth resubmitting IMO... Cheers, RickO

Ok guy's, after hearing, then seeing, the benefits of keeping Ben in the Rattler. You guys talked me into keeping him in the holder. Yes! You's are right. Then, esp. After cleaning the slab with WD 40. I can see the sticker adhesive is gone, along with any dirt or film. He'll be staying in the old school tomb. The darn slab looks as if I just got it back from PCGS. lol. Thank you, all. ;)

Oh, oh! Sorry RickO. After twisting and turning the coin in the sunlight. While I was taking photos of it. It looks as if I DO detect some toning in the coin after all! Both obverse and reverse. Esp. the reverse. Maybe it toned from the WD 40? :* Hmmmm?
