1916 Buffalo Nickel - Machine Doubling Disappointment

I was sorting through some of my old photo PCI holders and "rediscovered" this little gem. I bet the original owner was thrilled with the attribution only to be devastated when the truth was revealed.
I can only guess the grader (and likely the submitter) had never seen a real 1916 5c DDO and assumed the "doubling" around LIBERTY represented a DDO and not machine doubling (aka strike doubling).

Wow! Even I could see that was not the DD.
That's Professional Coin Certification Ineptitude.
Yeah the 16 DD may be the most prominent double die of all right up there with the 55
It's actually stronger than the '55. But it's not a Class I, doubled all the way around like the '55 so it's less impressive visually.
They misattributed it, and then under graded it 🤦♂️
I truly like that coin. I think it is very likeable. Congrats and thanks for sharing. Sorry about the misattributation.

Thanks and just to be clear ... I bought the coin many years ago knowing it was misattributed. I just thought it was a fun attribution error in a neat old slab.
What added to the fun was that the photo PCI slabs are generally graded conservatively based on today's guidelines and usually got their attributions right. The PCI of the "photo slab" era was far removed from the PCI of later years.

I used to buy ANACS photo certificate coins and was never let down by the grade compared to their assessment. Always higher inhand. I think I still may have walker certificate. If so, I'll post it.

That's a bummer alright. It's a good educational thing in this case
Clearly not the DD....I would keep it though...a real anomaly. Cheers, RickO
