FUN Day 1

On this day that will live in infamy, I wanted to post my first FUN report for Day 1 (thinking of this even before what happened today). But this year there is no FUN and one has to say 'what fun is that?' So call me crazy, but I went back through some of my previous FUN show reports to reminisce and think about what could have been. Here are snippets of some of my previous Day 1 reports. Think me daft and I won't revive snippets from Day 2, Day 3..... unless folks like this as something that helps yearning for shows to exist again. But I can post previous comments of later FUN days if there is positive response here.

In addition, I would like to think that I was buying newps at FUN today. But obviously I am not. But, I have been fortunate to buy some newps from the same dealers that I would like to think I would have picked up at their table at FUN. The first of these is below, I will post some that are arriving tomorrow.

In either case, I miss FUN. I miss the bourse, the auctions, and the interaction with many grreat people. And, there will be no Big Event 3 until next year......................

Fun Day 1

Interactions with great people highlights:
Shared a cab from the airport with MrEureka. Was great to meet you Andy and discuss coins on the way to the convention center. He handed me a token promoting his buisness. I was going to image and post it here, but I unknowingly handed it to the parking lot shuttle driver along with several quarters as part of a tip when dropped off at my car upon return yesterday.

At one of my visits to the PCGS table, I was nicely greeted by Don Willis and asked if he could help me. Well, I explained I had come back to retrieve the paper work for one of my submissions - in my panic of filling out the submission form earlier in the day I had listed my Collectors Society member number instead of my PCGS member number and wanted to correct it. Don burst out in laughter when he heard that. It was all rectified. Thanks PCGS!

So my day started at 4 am CT, hopped on the road to the airport to catch an early flight. My flight seemed to be full of folks going to FUN - local dealers and those that connected through. Had a nice chat with some of them at the gate before boarding. Got off the plane in Tampa, got a Taxi within 5 minutes and was lot viewing the Heritage auction lots in 20 minutes of getting off the plane - Tampa is a pretty easy place to get around. I went through pretty much all of the bust, seated, and barber silver in 3 hours. I started with around 40 lots I was tracking on my Ha page, by the time I was done, I was down to 6, 3 of which were newly added during lot viewing. I bid on 1 bust dollar in tonite's auction, I will have to see if I won it. Everything else is in the online only auction later in the week, except for a bust quarter as noted in the next paragraph.

One of key the reasons I love going to FUN is not only the coins, but also the club activities and social activities. I plan to hit the JRCS meeting Friday morning, the PCGS luncheon, and if time permits, some of the educational seminars and other club meetings. There will also be social activities, a dinner Thurs nite with numismatic friends, and Friday nite will get together with many folks at a bar nearby. So it will be an intense and busy time at FUN as usual.

I finally got to the bourse about 11:15 am, at least 5 minutes later than expected given the darn lights, and was off and running to my 3 favorites first thing to assess their offerings - CRO, Eye Appealing, and Perkins. JA had nothing for me, we had a nice chat, he asked me if I had coins for him, I did not think I did and told him maybe later. Eye Appealing had 2 eye appealing bust quarters that I recorded in my mind to come back and examine later. Perkins had quite a few bust quarters and dollars from his website and newps. I spent a good hour examining them, thinking 'dang my budget won't cover all of these' . So I recorded them in my mind for later consideration. This year I just don't have the budget I used to have so I don't buy right away when I see something I like.

Today January 6, 2021. Finally, here is a newp that arrived yesterday. I would like to think that I picked it up at Dave Wnuck's table today. Always go by (and buy) Dave's table. He has the eye and is simply an amazing numismatist. I don't always buy, but when he has a coin, any coin, you need to look and appreciate. But I always have a great chat with Dave. Or if I happen to be lot viewing next to him, Dave always is willing to discuss the coins in the auction with me, and boy do I learn from that. This one arrived in the mail yesterday from Dave and was in his latest newsletter. I somehow managed to beat everyone else to it. Even better in hand. Enjoy and best, SH

Yesterday morning we were to have left for the FUN show if it was held. Yesterday afternoon we got a report back that our daughter was positive for Covid. That would have been a mess if we were several hundred miles into our trip. She is feeling better and in very good spirits.

This year would have been my 2nd FUN show. I was really looking forward to the PCGS luncheon and chatting with their employees.

@spacehayduke.... Thank you for the 'show report'... I enjoyed reading that... almost as if FUN was happening. And that 1811 is a beauty. Cheers, RickO

Great idea for a post! Very enjoyable reading. I've never been to FUN but it's on my bucket list- maybe I'll see you there next year.

Nice idea and report! I also had my eye on that 1811 half, glad to see it got a good home. I've bought coins from Dave in the past, he always seems to have good stuff.
