My first US gold coin, help me grade it

Namvet69Namvet69 Posts: 9,270 ✭✭✭✭✭

This 1912 Indian Head dollar came to me in an ait-tite and gift packaged. I don't think it's seen the light of day for at least 20 years. Photo grading asks me to focus on the obv cheek, headband ribbon, garland and rev wing, neck. I'm not seeing any wear. Your expert opinions are appreciated as the grade value spread is wide. I have no clue. Peace Roy

    It's not a dollar. It's a $2.5 or quarter eagle. Nice coin. Looks AU58.

The best news is that this coin appears to be authentic. This series has been very heavily counterfeited and many are quite deceptive.

The coin (reverse especially) looks to me like it could garner an MS grade, but the notable hit to the jaw probably limits it to 62. Nice coin otherwise.

@CoinJunkie Yeah, I see that little ding. Thanks

There looks to be slight, but obvious rub on the cheek. Look how that area compares to the jaw, just below it. The disturbances in the left obverse field also have the look of slight circulation. I can’t get past AU58 as a maximum grade.

I see the same thing you do, but am discounting it to a degree given the uneven lighting on the coin. I don't see any other areas that explicitly indicate circulation unless I'm missing something.

I’m seeing similar disturbances in the left reverse field, too. My guess is that if the lighting were different, other areas would show evidence of very light circulation, as well.

I'm there with the AU guesses.
    Nice coin!

Can I get a guess too?! ...Not stealing a thread, just good timing
It's currently in my PCGS pile, definitely going within a month.

Pretty please...the top of the folded eagle's wing right below it's head looked like wear to me at first, or maybe it's just a weak strike and it also has some nice hourglass luster... it's throwing me off and I've never sent one of these out for grading. Just really curious what the "experts" think! I'm guessing also in the AU...

    Slightly different angle...

Avoid confusion by giving this one its own thread. I think the wing weakness is common on the 08, but would like to see other opinions on this one without it being overlooked.

@Smudge Glad to see a comparison coin, on mine the small feathers at the top of the left wing are still visible.
Is that a pmd scratch off the chin? Roy

Check Coinfacts, and the scratch looks like minor pmd that I don’t think would detail it.

The 1908 did not have the same details on the eagle's wing as the other dates. To the original coin, I say AU58. To the 1908 @Kurisu , I say MS61

I agree with upper AU. Nice coin. If I ever own a gold coin, it would be an Indian $5 or $10. Love, just can't justify the expense, especially now. Thanks for sharing.

The lack of details on the eagle on the second coin is how they made all 1908's, nothing to do with wear.

Great coin and a good place to start - there are only 15 coins in the series and most are affordable with the exception of the key date 1911D. I love the very American Indian design and the incuse minting

To me this looks cleaned. There are hairlines all over and there seems to be rub on the headdress feathers but MS detail in other places. Something is off to me. Perhaps I am losing my mind.
