Is this a 1916 or 1917

MartinMartin Posts: 749 ✭✭✭✭

This is my first OP.
I know you guys will chime in on this probably both ways. It make no difference to me.
This coin does not have stars on the reverse. I did not take a picture of the back. I have the coin if some one really wants to see the back just not with me now. Take it from me there are no stars. The history on this coin is; i had 2 friend from junior high school we were best friends. Two of us to this day the third passed a way a little over a year ago. This coin is owned by the other friend. It either belonged to the friend (that passed away) or the other friend grandmother the friend mixed together both parties junk silver. About $30 face. He was going to sell it at the local BM but wanted to know if there was anything that might be good. Before he does. There were two dateless no star SLQs I had to check

So what do the forumites think yea or net?

All comments welcome. And I have thick skin so let it fly

Thanks
Martin

Ps I hope those pictures work. I’ve never tried posting a pic

I'm not sure what you mean by stars on the reverse, the three under the Eagle? I would suspect they are there, as that certainly appears to be a type 2 Quarter, 1917 to 1923. The back of the hair (among other things) is the tell.

I agree the hair curl is not there. It is the one thing that is making suspect.

There are no stars under the eagle. I looked with a glass. (Because the coin is very worn ).

    Thanks for the comments

There are other tells, including the drapery folds. This obverse picture is NOT of a 1916.

Again, this is a Type 2 Standing Lib, so I suspect you'll find stars under the Eagle or the reverse is nearly flat and they have disappeared.

As a quick Obverse pointer for future reference, all of the items I have circled in your picture are from a Type 2 Obverse. Type 1 Obverses are noticeably different.

    1. Hair and Head of Ty2
    2. Does not have Leaves on and over the L in Liberty as a Type 1 does
    3. Does not have the extended and "bulbous" drapery bottom a Type 1 has

I trust it's 1917, based on your post that there are no stars. With that said, the only value from my perspective is the melt value ($4-$5) . It makes a cool pocket piece or ball marker on the greens. Your friend should keep the $30 face and buy more junk with a stimulus check. He may thank me later.

Lol. He does golf. I had thought he had sold all of his silver in the 08 or 09 run up. He had a small bag he had missed plac and then when our friend died he got his small collection mostly all common stuff the things kids collected in junior high. Lots
Of wheat backs a proof Ike dollar that my mom bought him. He still had it. And some
    Proof silver quarters and dimes

Thanks for the responce. I will double check
My eyes and relook for stars. I did glass the back for
    Them.

Back to the eye doctor. Was just there a Month ago. He said he got me corrected to 20/20. I might want my money back lol

    Thanks

    I vote it's 1916.
You know why? Because it's 2021 and I'm an optimistic guy.

@pursuitofliberty thanks for sharing your knowledge to me. It saved me a submission fee 👍🏻 I made a special trip this morning to get a
Picture of the reverse. I took the phone and shot a picture and in the picture the 3 stars showed up like the morning sun. Plain as day.
I’m going to have a talk with eye doctor. His bill was also in the mail box when I checked today. Go figure

@TwoSides2aCoin all the Junk silver is going to end up in my stash. Hope your are correct about it going up. I’ve been stacking for a
    Long time

    Thanks again for the info

    Glad to help @Martin

Wish I could be the bearer of news that was ... YES! it's a '16!! ... but alas, it's silver and it's a SLQ, so it's all good
