The 1971-D is just not a shining example for quality within the Kennedy series. Because of this, it is a tough call. 65 seems reasonable and I would offer a higher grade opinion without seeing it in hand first. Still... this one is better than the vast majority in terms of surviving in this state of preservation

I just finished going through a $500 dollar box of halves. After looking at all of them and different year qualities my first thought was a 64/65. I separated them by years and now will go back for a closer look. I found one or two 71's that look a little better on the reverse but we will see. None were toned and no silver.
Worn dies common on these coins and Ikes as well. Some are just weak and others from heavily worn dies like this one. Because of this an MS 67 grade is too much for me.
The submission arrived today and I had a close look at it for some time. There is weakness of strike on both the obverse and reverse as seen in the TruViews. There is also a luster break at some places on obverse and reverse. With a loupe there is plenty of light scratches in those areas. The orange added show the luster breaks.
The lighter color can be seen on an angle shot of coin.
After looking closer, I wonder if the color did add a couple points or if the weak and incomplete strike cost a couple points. The PCGS score MS62. I think I would have preferred an AU58+ or a MS66.
The other coin has a really cool florescent green, that I am not sure I have seen before.

Why do I gotta be the 1st ? I wanna say 67 cause I like it that much, but I'll guess ms66.
65
or QC
As t strike and marks: MS64. For some reason PCGS is a bit tough on clad Kennedy toned halves. I will stick with MS64.
The half dollar did straight grade, as opposed to this one that got details cleaned
67
Edited to add: I just enlarged the pictures and as a result, my grade guess has dropped by two points.

66, pretty coins. Ive seen some very big prices for toned Kennedy halves lately.
MS66....Not a fan of tarnish and should not be part of the grade (IMO).... Cheers, RickO
The reverse is a big turn off with the weak strike and the toning seems suspect. 65 tops for me. Sorry

64, that thing is mushy.

Central details weak. But that never matters when color is involved.
It's really no better than a 64 without the color.

With stacking friction a coin can still grade as high as 64. It was docked for that and the strike IMO.
Sometimes Trueviews don't really show the true nature of a coin. I kind of think this Kennedy half is an example of that.
So you originally were thinking MS69?!
Um, no.😄
