Fake 1875-CC Trade Dollar?

IkesTIkesT Posts: 3,190 ✭✭✭✭✭

Pretty sure this is a fake, but since I don't look at many trade dollars, I would appreciate a second opinion.

Not so fast, guys. I think there is a very good chance it's real, just whizzed or buffed to within a breath of its life. It is definitely an ugly, severe problem coin in my opinion, but like I said, I think it may be real...

I think it has a significant possibility of being a transfer die forgery, but also could be a very messed with genuine coin. I don't have enough confidence that it's a fake to report it.

Thank you for the reply. The mushy detail is one of the things that bothers me - is that due to buffing or to a fake die/mold used to make the coin? I'm not sure.

I also see surface pitting, especially on the reverse.

Some of the design details don't look quite right. On the obverse, look at the ropes on the packaging - they look wide and smooth. Could buffing do that? It looks more like die tooling to me, but like I said, I'm not 100% sure.

Undeterminable with the photos shown. I have to along with mbogoman, tho. The date looks large but it may just be the camera angle.

Nice job on the enlargements and posting the photos right side up, IkesT. I was getting neck strain looking at the seller's images on eBay! Sometimes it's just hard to make a definite call from poor photos, small photos, etc. and I tend to err on the side of caution.

I agree with the subsequent comments, and like Kaz said, err on the side of caution. Even if it is determined to be real, it has so many issues there would be no reason to touch it. Fugly coin or fugly fake - since I can't make a call either way with any real confidence, I wouldn't be reporting it as fake, either.

80/20 ...... Counterfeit. Fields are pitted, letters are mushy, not crisp. Make sure returns are accepted.

For what it's worth, I took my fellow members' advice and did not report this one. That seemed only right, since I was uncertain enough to ask for other opinions, and those opinions all carried the same uncertainty.

As @Kaz mentioned, the poor photos made it difficult to make the call. For a minute, I thought I had a smoking gun on the reverse. It looked like the "E" in "E PLURIBUS UNUM" was lost in the transfer, and they tried to punch it in the wrong place - but again, the photo is bad enough that I can't be sure.

I would label it fake that has been buffed to make it look acceptable... Run away...well, no need to run, it has been pulled....Cheers, RickO
