Second 1 in the date looks to be struck over something. Could be a die chip, but the geometry is too straight in my opinion. Upside-down 1? Letter I from the legend? Something else? In any case, I've looked at hundreds of 1818's and this one is the first for me, so in the collection it goes! MADNESS!

excellent images... The I looks to be a reasonable explanation- That would be my guess
