Silver Bar - Chinese - Counterfeit or real?

WindycityWindycity Posts: 3,524 ✭✭✭✭✭

Bar is 31.3 grams and test positive as silver but beyond that I don't know much about the markings and whether this is authentic or counterfeit. Any opinions welcome.

Not sure I get why this would be something to buy.

It looks completely fake. I’d be very surprised if that tested as 99.5 silver.

Its fake. The bar is saying that it's 99.6% silver and has a weight of 99.5. With the date on the bar being 1937, the weight would most likely be in Tael which make no sense at all given the weight is just over 31 grams. The mandarin characters are somewhat incorrect also.

Well, even if fake, it could be good silver so you can melt it.

If it's not fake, some of these bars are far more valuable than the U.S. equivalent. So, there's that...

unless it has a lead core - can you do a specific gravity?

Heavy Silver Plate (A1) will test like .925 or .999 unless you really know how to read the scratch test.
Do you have a picture of the acid test?

You could. Honestly, that one just looks bad.

If you were scrapping it as silver, take it to someone with a gun who might actually just cut it in half.

Do a specific gravity test, if it's lead inside you will find out.
