Rolls of coins are worth more than the individual coins-This Is Why

Quite interesting, IMO
Bags of coins are worth more than the individual coins-This Is Why

Same thing in baseball cards. Old unopened packs are worth insane amts. over the probably off centered, damaged corner and/or wrinkled cards inside. Not sure why that is. Not to mention you roll the dice and not sure if you get a Rookie card or a H.o.F.'er.
Later, Paul.
Thanks, Boston. I didn't quite didn't get the gist of it. It's still early around here so I'll have another cup of coffee and watch it again. Maybe then my brain will be in gear. Ohh....
This^^^^^. I have 9 packs of 89 UD low number which are going for about $15 to $20 each because of the hunt. These are left over from the boxes that we opened when they first came out. I was doing some searching on the Kennedy halves when I found a site that said when the last time silver hit 50 bucks an ounce he sold ten dollar bank rolls for $35.00 each. Even now silver halves are not that much money in circulated condition. It's like a slot machine I guess.
That's a good analogy

I thought rolls of coins were worth more than individual coins because there are more than one in the roll!
You are right ... I need a break.
Depends on the coins, I have rolls of Indian head pennies, all common dates so yes, because there are more than one in a roll they are more valuable.
Interesting interview with Harvey Stack. His buyer was right........but only if he could buy up all of the rolls of 50-D's in existence. Reminds me of the guy that has cornered the market on 1909-VDB PR Lincoln cents.
OINK
Years ago I bought a roll of MS 1955 P quarters in a tightly wrapped paper roll of the kind used in the 50's and 60's.
I bought the roll for $60.00 ($3.00 per quarter) a price higher than spot. I would have paid higher had the seller asked.
My reason for buying the roll was the treasure hunting aspect of this date and MM. I hoped to find gem examples of the coin.
When I opened the roll I found 20 quarters that would grade 61 to 63 at best.
The treasure hunt aspect of buying rolls does exert upward pressure on the value of rolls.
These were sold at Heritage auction night before last...practically 0% chance you could recoup the cost if you cracked open these boxes
fwiw and in keeping with this being a coin forum - I bought a roll of BU red 38-s lincoln cents from Heritage about a dozen years ago or so. the roll had been opened, but the coins were there and all were uniform in quality and color. I think I only paid around $400. the auction is old enough it has fallen out of the search results so I could be wrong about that (my memory is terrible these days). I recall having the impression that they were worth more than i paid for them
Like lottery tickets. The true value is a fraction of the sale price.
I don't know about original rolls anymore. I see an awful lot of "original" paper rolls with Las vegas casino markings and Bell Tel on Auction.zip and other sites. just saying. Peace Roy

Many years ago I purchased 'original' bank rolls of 1943 steel cents - two rolls.... I did not open them at the time... Then, about two years ago (maybe three), I saw them while going through some stuff, and opened one roll... Wow.. pristine cents with luster. Have re-rolled that one and the other is still intact. Cheers, RickO
Lots of rolls.
Never thought of why they cost more but I guess it might be for what a collector could find if they got an original/unpicked roll. As I started collecting Morgans, I wanted to buy a roll of them. I lost many auctions on EBAY until I finally got a 79 S roll with a Buy It Now back in 2003. Maybe my best buy on EBAY from over 350 purchases. Funny part to story, when the package came, I open the plastic roll holder on my couch to make sure I didn't drop one on the floor as I examined them. Looked great, better than my expectations, but then I realized there were only 19. I turned the sofa over a few times looking for the missing coin. My wife thought I was nuts. Finally I contacted the seller and said I only received 19. Was nervous since I wasn't 100% sure I didn't misplace it, didn't want to return the roll or get beat out of 1 coin. Seller then remembered they sent the best one to PCGS and would gladly mail to me. Told me he bot the roll in 70's. Well I get a MS64 Rattler in the mail that could pass for a 65+. Including that coin, a picture of the roll, the reverse of what must have been the bottom coin of the roll, and what I consider the average coin in the roll. I would say this was an original roll. Enjoy.

I sort of "collect" original bank rolls - For me it's mostly about the BU silver but I do think they are becoming more & more scarce as time goes by. Those of us who do buy them regularly have a good feel for what is original and what has been tampered with or re-packaged. I haven't added to many in recent years because premiums are up there.
