Ok, so I don’t want to post too many details until I have the coin in hand, but I believe I found a LDS capped bust half with a die crack that I have not seen listed anywhere and have not seen on any other coin. So my question is if it turns out to be what I think it is, what is the process PCGS uses to add new varieties/ die states to their list of recognized list of varieties? Like I said, I will post more details and pictures when I have it in hand.

Thanks for your input.
Ken

Not sure PCGS will pick up a new Die State for the Capped Busts, but maybe, especially if it is a notable discovery.

There are multiple members on this forum who are part of the Bust Half Nut Club (BHNC) and the John Reich Collectors Society (JRCS) and I think many of them would be interested in discussing your find.

    I know I would ...

I agree with what @pursuitofliberty has already mentioned and will add that it might take the new die state to be listed into the standard reference for the series in order for PCGS to move.

to truly be sure that what you have is "new" -- post it here or send pics to one of the CBH experts. Chances are they have seen it before and can tell you exactly what you have.

Bust halves are probably the most studied series of early federal coins. A new die state, while not out of the question, would be a great surprise.

    Let's see it.

But, to your question, PCGS sometimes turns to recognized experts when their in-house authorities are uncertain.

I can't wait to see what you've got.

  • Here are the pictures of the coin I originally posted about. I messaged @lkeigwin and he showed me pictures of 2 more O-107s with the same die crack. So I didn’t make a new discovery, but it seems to be pretty rare to find 107s with the crack.

Would I be correct in saying they like it to be published by experts somewhere first?

I would think so. If you are going to attribute by Overton variety, I don't think you can create your own new Overton number, slap it on a slab and expect anyone to know what the heck you are talking about.
