I imagine the OP got at least $13 in entertainment value just by reading some of the responses in this thread. :)

Well then, I'm going to go list some on BST. We'll see how many people want to have fun. I'm guessing zero.

Always fun to see someone enjoying the hobby THEIR way, especially when the relative cost is small but the enjoyment is high.

Just as "fun" (not!) to see the knowitalls say their piece, and then, not getting the response they want, continue telling someone what that person SHOULD do and how WRONG they are.

If the OP were brand new and asking for advice, that's one thing. He isn't, he knows he is overpaying/being taken, but it is a cost level he is comfortable with. He actually replied very politely to those that like to tell others how to do things and why they are so smart to do so.

As for the "sell in bulk of 5000 for $150, to someone who has a roller and then resells for $6.50/roll to someone like the OP"....sounds like the only 2 smart people are the one who buys for $150 and resells for a buttload more and the one who only spends ~$13 of "fun money"...the other person didn't maximize their profit potential so that's not someone to listen to on the business side, and the roll purchaser is spending less than a couple lattes to have fun for a few hours.

It’s even more fun to watch people kiss your ass for giving a long speech about not doing exactly what you are doing :)

@jmlanzaf I can turn on the TV if I want a shot of hypocrisy. I wasn't in the rich preppy crowd nor the computer geeks, kickers, or jocks which leaves one. The so-called loser stoners that hung out in the smoking area that came from broken and/or poor families who most of which eventually dropped out (including myself).
Anyway, enough about me :D I wanna see some more rolls!

For those of us old enough to remember going to the bank with $2 of lawn mowing money to search through 4 rolls of Lincoln Cents or a roll of Nickels, this brings back the thrill of the hunt. There's certainly more "cost effective" ways of doing it, but at $13, it's not like were talking princely sums of money here. Heck, I think I paid about that to see Ishtar... had I spent that money on a roll of wheats and a couple of IHC's, I'd have been much more entertained! ...and at least I'd still have something of substance to show for the price of admission...

The OP can (and will) do what they want, and that is as it should be.

But those promoting "the thrill of the hunt" or whatever, are forgetting that the result was a foregone conclusion. The seller stacked the deck. There was never going to be a big payday. ;)

Hey, thats what I used to do! Exact amount too- $2 a week for mowing grass. One week I scored 4 rolls of solid wheats and old "king" canadian pennies, it sucked however as that meant I was broke for the week!- had to save them all. I think the old lady teller at the bank new what she was doing!

  • KurisuKurisu Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Nailed it exactly!
...Me 1978 biking with friends to the local bank.
Heading back to a spot literally by the train tracks (NW Indiana) and pouring out a few rolls of pennies to search through for wheaties. Which was about all most of us knew at the time lol. I was about 10.
I genuinely feel like a kid every time I open a roll and it's still my favorite thing to do.
And a whole lot of my collection has come from this.

As a side note...some of those "unsearched" rolls were both created years ago and often by collectors who don't actually know what to look for. Sometimes seeded with an ender that now is worth bidding on because the seller just doesn't know (of course hoping that the reverse of that ender isn't totally trashed lol!).

If the roll was fun and or fantastic, price does not matter! Neither did the potential lie of "unsearched"!
I like the movie comparison...nothing wrong with paying a few bucks for super duper fun and mystery and sometimes even having it pay off unexpectedly :-)
    Enjoy the hunt!

I bought the crimper end jig for cents. Then I bought the empty cent rolls with one end crimped already. I placed the crimper on a drill and crimped away .. It did a good job but not a great job... I bought the jig for $25.00 ? (Its been a while Ago) . Its not worth the time and effort.

They actually make crimper jigs? What does that look like? Are they different for every size roll?

Yes. If you go to the link I posted, they show the jigs.

If you can sell a roll of wheats with two cull Indian Cents for $13, it pays for itself in no time.

You can still get one for less than $5! It's just a little bit o plastic. They've been around since the 50's.

    Here's a whole kit...
See that square black plastic thingy?

Now, where do I buy antiqued rolls?

Sorry @Bochiman If I was a little judgey this morning, I often wake up with an axe to grind and the wheels were spinning.
The rest of the day I focused on being constructive rather than destructive and this whole thread has given me a new/not so new idea. The thrill of the hunt is missing here, until its right in your face.
Be honest and tell what you think guys after all, that's what I do :D Once it's done I'll post it on the bay to see what happens.
Like Joeys rolls there has to be some bait, the 81D among a few others chums it up real nice.

Not just any album but...drum roll...Toned & mint state Lincoln cents.

  • CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 9,121 ✭✭✭✭✭

Obviously this is a rough draft and I will have to replace some spotty ones and also learn to capture the toning better.

  • daltexdaltex Posts: 3,486 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm not abut to tell anyone how to collect, least of all someone who takes as much enjoyment from his hobby as Joey, but I hate to see him (or anyone) being ripped off. I guarantee that any rolls/bags of wheats that he would buy at market rates are not searched for the minor die varieties, small errors, and interesting toning patterns he seem to cherish. I like to see him getting that kind of coin for face value, or at worst market value of a common variety. I understand that I provides him hours and hours of entertainment, and wouldn't want to take that away from him. I wince when I see his purchases from his nearby pawn shop because I think of how many equivalent coins he could get at his coin dealer or coin show for the same money. This roll is just a more egregious example of the same thing. It's not whether he got $13 of entertainment from this put-together roll, but that he could have gotten four times the entertainment from four rolls for the same money.

  • CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 9,121 ✭✭✭✭✭

I get hours of entertainment looking for these.
