The label says it's a "PIEFORT" so it was struck on a double thick planchet using the 1/2 ounce dies.

Help me out here. The coin is hallmarked 1/2 ounce but is actually 1 ounce because one of the dies was engraved 1/2 ounce and it's a double thick piedfort? Is that correct? :#

I am no expert, but I think it is basically considered a commemorative of the 1/2oz angel with the concept of two coins (2-1/2oz’s) struck together to make a 1-1oz coin.

  • KliaoKliao Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭✭✭

To my knowledge, the dimensions of the planchet is exactly the same except it is doubled thickness which intern is double the amount of weight in gold. The royal mint I have seen, done this many times with various coins.

    Here's some more info.

"A Piedfort coin is one that looks like a normal coin but is typically twice as thick. The double thickness means that (say) a silver coin has twice the amount (weight) of silver as a normal coin, increasing its investment value."

    Price dropped to $340........................................!!!!
I have a very nice antique locket that is for sale. CVF or maybe CVE initials. 1.5" in diameter. 13.82 grams of 12k. It actually scratch tested 14k but I'm uncertain of my acid as it's not fresh. I suspect it is 14k but will call it 12k just for tickles.
At today's price of $1,886 per oz this would be a $417 piece. I'll take $380 shipped. The initials are tri colored gold. Dented on the back. Glue residue here and there (you clean, not me). Not marked for purity.
    Not happy send it back.
    Thanks, stay safe,

If there's interest, I will look at ebay and drop it below the average for each one.

    Someone did ask about pricing.
I took some time looking these up and tried to go lower than I could find, reasonably.

If someone wanted to group them, I would do the MS69/MS69pl batch of 5 (1 of each) for ~$925, plus shipping and no fee to me payment. Individually, the ones in that group would price between $175-$220.

For the other 4 (the MS68PL/MS68DMPL//MS68DMPL/GemBu), I would group them for $740 (individually $170-$200) plus shipping and fee free.

If someone wanted all 9, I would take off another $50 AND ship free (still asking no fee to me payment). So, that would be $1615. Roughly $35/oz for the silver.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
