Unusual 'Standing Liberty' Token

cmerlo1cmerlo1 Posts: 8,015 ✭✭✭✭✭

I got this out of a local dealer's junk token box. It is made of aluminum and has a reversed and rather crude rendition of MacNeil's Standing Liberty design, with the word 'LIBERTAD' above. On the reverse it says 'VALUE 25'. I bought it because I like the crudeness of the design as well as the repunched '5' on the reverse, and it was super-cheap. My first thought was that it might be Cuban, because 'liberty' is in Spanish. The reverse is in English, however, so I'm not sure what to make of it. I know there was a large American entertainment industry in Cuba prior to the Communist revolution, so I'm wondering if this could be connected to it. Does anyone know what this is?

Looks like a game token of some type. Maybe even from a board game.

    LIBERTAD is Spanish.

    Game counter?

Script from a Spanish speaking area in the US, Mexico or Central America?

    Migrant worker work counter?

    All glory is fleeting.

Although R9 I would not agree as this book is older. There was a large amount of gaming and other tokens that were in this reference book a few months back from an eBay seller. He bought a huge
collection from the Fauver family. A few were in there but, I remember seeing only brass and not the 25 cent value. The better grade ones brought good money........ around $150-$200

Valuations are on the last page

One page back (page 21) Top left, chapter VI has the intro to these pieces.
