I've been looking for a nice '57 Clemente and saw this listed:
Seller seemed to think the lifted corner was significant enough to warrant a relatively low BIN for what is otherwise a very nice card.
I received the card, gently folded the corner back over, and wah-lah!
Very pleased with my purchase and just wanted to share.

That's a beautiful card!

I bought a sealed 1985 Nike Postcard Set for $1 last year.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
I purchased a raw '76 Carew #400 for $4.75 and it wound up grading PSA 10.
I hope to have a similar story. I bought a ‘73 OPC Reggie Jackson for about $5. Beautiful rough cut around all four edges. I’m crossing my fingers for a PSA 9, of which there are none graded.
Crazy they didn’t fold that corner over before listing. Seriously.

I don’t know that I will ever beat this one. Similar to the OP, the seller was far too hard on his own card. Where others might see a stained, off center and titled card and pass right over it, I see a beautiful item.
It is at this point I should thank YOU GUYS. I’ve been around a while now but one of the best things I learned here was to pay for a bag of microfiber cloths and wipe down your cards to make them look their best for you or prior to submitting. It will catch grime, dust, loose debris, wax and fingerprints - all of which hurt a cards presentation.
So for ten bucks and then ten cents (the cost of the cloth), a great deal became a spectacular one. I think, anyway. If you are on your phone or tablet, I think landscape is the better view to turn it sideways. Scroll slowly and note that the ‘stain’ runs from above the left shoulder on a downward slope across the chest toward the hands and ending visibly on the right border. Or should I say ran? 😉

It was wax. And it’s gone.
Thank you microfiber cloths and fellow CU collectors; that’s the $10 and $.10 I’ve ever spent!

Nice Mantle. As the seller it’s odd to not take that step to remove the wax.

Well, my story is as a young collector I started with McGwire, Bonds, Henderson, Etc. I poured a lot of money (well for a teenager it was a lot of money) into the cards and enjoyed the hobbie. Stopped collecting for a while after and about 15 years later I was disappointed that they were not worth much.
Well, my story is I bought a storage unit about 2 years ago and from the front it looked like a typical unit and all you could see were nicely stacked boxes in the front. When we got to the back of the unit it was lined with 60’s- modern sports cards.
100 plus binders and another 20 plus boxes full. So thats how I got back into collecting and grading with psa.
I never did find any Mantles though.
My best finds have been at swap meets. About 7 years ago, I bought a '68 Ryan RC, '68 Mantle, '69 Jackson RC, '79 Smith RC PSA 8 for $65 total. The Ryan graded a PSA 4, Mantle graded a PSA 6 MC, and Jackson a PSA 2 (but had great eye appeal with no creases). The guy had mostly old toys and just one small box of baseball cards.
About 3 years ago I was at the same swap meet and bought a '77 Dawson RC for $15. It graded a PSA 8.5.
I was recently on Ebay looking for Brian Downing bats. I found a seller who was selling a Downing signed bat with no mention if it being game used. He also had a Bobby Grich and a Dale Murphy signed bat. I worked out a deal for $130 shipped for the 3 bats. When they arrived, all were game used and the Murphy bat was incredible.

In 2009 I bought this raw off of eBay.
The seller marveled at the quality and said it was probably the nicest raw Yaz he had ever seen.
The consignor had no interest in subbing it.
The auction images were extremely poor & blurry.
I figured his comments were a bunch of salesman BS but took a chance. I was the winner for $143
I subbed it to Beckett at the Philly show a year later.

It could just be my biased opinion, but i feel you are doing your future self, and that card a disservice by not having that Yastrzemski rookie in a PSA holder.
This past year I was in a local flea market. They have a big antique section in the back where people can rent spaces and sell items. There are usually some cards in the glass cases but nothing great. One day I came across this beauty tucked into the back of one of the glass cases, listed for $30. Bought it and sent it in for grading. Now worth around $400-500.

Bought a raw card on eBay for $80 last year. Just came back from grading and it’s now an $800 card.
Care to share a little more? What card? Pictures?
PSA gave the card an 8 grade. Bought this raw from a Canadian on eBay last year for $80 before I sent it to Orr.
There's a thread on here about this, but 4 years ago I bought a partial box of 80 Topps basketball... probably 22 packs at about $35 each. Pulled a PSA 9 Bird/Magic... did a pack sub and got a 10, 9 and two 8s... opened more packs and got another Bird/Magic that should be a 7.5 or so (never had it graded)!
Purchased this raw off eBay a few years back for about $8. Subbed it and dimed it. Most recent sale: $1000.

My autographed Sugar Ray Robinson card. I got it for $30.00 shipped.
some dude listed a original 48 leaf Williams on eBay for about $12 a few years back. still got it
Bought 50 ea. Score baseball Bo Jackson #697 for $50.00 total. (Bat/shoulder pads black/white), in 1990.
Bought 50 ea. 1988 Raiders Police Bo Jackson RC for $25.00 in 1990. Most appear to be 9's with maybe 5 10's.
Bought this in 2007,
I think I told this story years ago but it is worth telling again. About 15 years ago I was at a tag sale with my wife and sister in law. I was out of cards at the time but saw a large box filled with 100's of 1950 and 1960's baseball cards. The price was $4 for the whole box. I looked at it and the lady selling it said that it had some good cards in it and I should but it. (Kind of like an old saleswoman. My wife said that for $4 it will keep me busy for a while going through it. I bought it and put it in the car. As we were driving away I said to my wife to look through and see if you recognize any of the names. She said she sees Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams but those were the only ones she recognizes. When I got home I found 5 mickey Mantles and about 80% of the 1959 Ted Williams set. (missing Ted signs though), 2 Pete Rose rookie cards, 2 Willie McCovey rookies, 2 Lou Brock rookies, a mint set of the Topps coins (All Star Set) from the 1960's and many HOfs. there are all in very good to excellent condition with some better and some worse. That got me back into collecting again.
My in laws always look for cards for me when they are at Tag sales if I am not there. Years later my mother in law found a complete 1975 Topps set for $10. She bought it and hoped that she did not over pay. I told her she did fine.
post a picture!
About 30 years ago my granny was at a church yard sale and found a shoebox filled with cards from the 50s (she recognized all the names) for $5.
She asked a man standing next to her if he thought her grandson would like them - he replied no - they were too beat up. She said thanks and walked off. She looked back to see the man buying them.
So now I screw everyone I can to get the best card deals.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
Ahem - “screw over” I meant.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
Hey, both methods will work...

Facebook Marketplace last summer. Montana Rookie, Elway Rookie, Marino Rookie, Ripken Rookie TT, Ripken Rookie Donruss, Clemens Rookie Topps and Donruss, Thomas Rookie Leaf, Smith Rookie (VG), and a Glavine Rookie Fleer for $125. The Montana and Ripken will be future grading candidates.
I remember some of my friends saying I was crazy to be buying 86/87 Fleer basketball boxes for $10k back in 2005-2012 😎
Bought a 1984 Donruss Mattingly raw...listed as card #1B (front of cards lists his position as 1B). Snagged it for under $10 and it graded PSA 10!
Dumb luck for me. Started collecting Pokemon two years ago with my son to try to get him into grading. We bought a very nice collection on ebay of the early stuff for about $3,000 - probably worth at least ten times that now after grading - this stuff has taken off like a rocket (no pun intended) during the lockdown. Lots more nice cards to grade too:

I bought a collection back in late 2018 for $550...the guy advertised it on Craiglist as 100k cards and had a picture of a lot of boxes in various stacks. It took me 3 trips with my Honda CRV to get all of the boxes, which filled up an old elevator...my best estimate was 500k cards...I am guessing after grading I will get out $50k to $75...10 rookies each of Klay and Kawhi, Fleer Metal basketball sets from 80's, tons of Jordans, Kobes, yadda yadda yadda...what a treat that was going thru that collection over the next 3 months or so...I have about eight 5k count boxes filled up with stars from that collection, as well as another 500 to thousand cards that are first on the list to get graded...the collection was left to this guy by his friend's wife when his friend passed away...the friend was a dealer who set up at shows...the guy I bought them from knew little about sports cards and insisted that cards from the era of these cards were worthless...
Bought this guy for $20 about 15 years ago. I swear it's better than a PSA3, but I've cracked and resubmitted it twice and gotten 3s both times. Sigh...

Pulled the Rice out of a pack in 1986 and bought this Starr from a card shop when I was a kid (early 80's) for, I think, $2.
Purchased a run of Clemente cards years ago from someone who posted them on craigslist. The first time we met, I bought all of his Clementes 1956-1973, but I didn't want to pay his asking price for the rookie. I kept in touch with him though and eventually bought it from him for $150. It was in a screw down, and had the creasing. At the time, I was new to collecting and wasn't 100% sure it was authentic either. Sent it in for grading and I think it is one of the best 1.5s out there, eye appeal wise.
