How much will the 2020-W Gold Eagle cost?

I know there is a formula for pricing against spot but I don't know what it is?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Gary

Found the US Mint pricing chart,,,,, looks like it will cost $2490 as long as Gold is under $1900.

What is the general opinion on these?
Looks like might not be worth buying?
What do others think?

I stay away from bullion at those prices.....Sure, perhaps in a year or so, that will be cheap - or not. I purchased gold when it was cheap, and now sit comfortably with stacks that are pure profit. :) Cheers, RickO

That’s too much to pay for something which will most likely fall in the after market. CDN bid for the 2019-W is about $85 over melt on the $50 1 oz.

If buying gold I would suggest a bullion dealer at a show. At this level unless it’s close to melt (say no more than $100 or so over spot on $50 1oz)) no interest. Slabbed MS69/70 AGE or AGB wb my target.

If gold takes a dive you lose especially if you high payer.

I'd figure you can take today's gold price and look at the grid.

I'm guessing the gold price won't change much between now and tomorrow when they will price.

If this sells out even in 24 hours, a LOT of flippers will be disappointed when they find almost no buyers in the aftermarket.

This is not a low mintage rare bullion coin. It should not be worth any more than the already too high mint price. And after all these years, nothing is special about the design.

There are way better things to buy for $2,490 out there.

  • GoldminersGoldminers Posts: 3,989 ✭✭✭✭✭

There are people selling lipstick, sneakers, and magic cards who have these already listed pre-sale asking $3,000 range.

I believe this one is not going to sell for much more than mint price at all, after only a couple weeks, except for a few 70's.

Eventually lemmings all jump over the cliff because they all think the one in front of them knows what they are doing so they follow along hoping for the big prize. FOMO. LOL

The advantage of pre-selling is that if you can't get $3000 by morning, you can always just not play the game.

Now I see almost 80 listings from $3000-7000 for these common burnished golds the mint could not sell many for hundreds less last year. My advice to any collectors is just do not buy them from the Mint or any of these flippers on eBay for a couple weeks, you will get them cheaper when all these people figure out this is not valuable like a unique lower mintage gold WWII privy. There will be a flood of returns, if this does sell out.

By 'not a low mintage' coin do you mean the lowest minted burnished gold eagle ever struck? And it will be the last year of this reverse. Seems much more collectible to me than a WW2 commemorative gold coin.

Burnished gold eagle mintages, edited to show what are lower mintages for this. The 2012 has kept a high value for 70's but all these are probably lower than the 2020 will be assuming a sellout.

    2012- 5,829
    2015- 6,533
    2016- 6,887
    2017- 5,800
    2019- 6,365

2020- planned 7,000 mintage. This is NOT a high demand coin for collectors, just flippers.

I will add that gold is $1,858 as I type, and $2,490 is some serious premium for a relatively standard gold bullion coin.

I thought the mintage for 2019 AM EAGLE GOLD UNC 1 OZ should be 6365? Were there that many returns?

As of late? That is what it has always been. Not just here but in every collectibles market. It is just worse now because everyone is either sitting at home and working from home, so they all have time to jump online for any and every collectibles drop. The sportscard market it twice as bad.

The Mint was trying to work the "last of the old reverse design" angle to gin up sales for this one but apparently folks aren't too excited at $2500. I have no problem accessing the page for this and can add one to the cart anytime I wish right now. No lag on the site, no Cloudflare security lockouts...
Edit to add...looks like it just now became unavailable. Gotta be the flippers

Wow, that was quick! 20 some minutes.
It's the end of an era for Gold Eagles with this design.
Officially there will now be only 13 years of 1 ounce burnished W eagles in the series.
Next year you can by that ugly giant eagle eye on the coins, yuck!

The US Mint just took in $17,430,000 in 20 some minutes!

eBay is making a killing off this new trend. Already 100 300+ listed trying to find someone who wants to play the game.

I am so glad this is the last of that design series.

I really like the design. I hope gold drops so I can purchase. It’s just way too high right now. I’d buy a half ounce, probably.

Last two eBay sales were $2800 and $2,700. less 10% and not much gain at $2,490. However, there were a few lucky sellers who found some aggressive buyers early and did better.

Over 350 edited to say over 400 listed on eBay for sale now. These are die hard collectors.

After having my 2019 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle come back a PF69, missing out on the AGE V75 (I did get the silver), I bought one today just to torture myself waiting to see if it comes back an MS70.
If not, this is the last 2020 AGE I'll ever buy from the mint! :p

Submitted a couple of best offers at $2490, we'll see. It's quite comical that these sellers think they have their finger on the pulse of the hobby because they were able to obtain one before it sold out. I see many returns coming.

The Coinworld article that just came out on this 2020 issue also mentioned a 2019 mintage at 5851.

Anyone knows where they get those figures from?

My 'google/search' skill are not very good. So, I was unable to find the specific CW article you referenced.

Notwithstanding, the Mint's "cumulative sale figure" for 19EH was exactly 5,851 in the 1/12/20 report.
    Link: https://www.usmint.gov/about/production-sales-figures/cumulative-sales?years=2020&2020weeks=1079&2019weeks=&2018weeks=&2017weeks=&2016weeks=&2015weeks=

Perhaps, your CW article cites a figure from a non-final sales report without including the report date. Specifically, it appears that CW could have used a figure from the 1/12/20 sales report (5,851), as opposed to the 'final/last' figure from the 4/5/20 sales report (6,365).

Apology. It was Coin News not Coinworld.

I believed you are right in where they get their mintage from, not knowing the 2019 sales continued onto March/April of this year.

These burnished gold eagles will be selling for less than the Mint price on eBay soon.

  • derrybderryb Posts: 36,823 ✭✭✭✭✭

We all assume that these uncirc W Eagles in both gold and silver have always been struck on burnished blanks.

I wonder why the mint stopped using the word "burnished" in it's description of the gold and silver W eagles.

The TPGs have been sporadic over the years with using the word "burnished" on their labels.

There will be hundreds of returns on this one as stated above many times, it was not a good flip coin, yet 300-400 on eBay.

Last auction final went for $2,425 about a half hour ago. Below the original $2,490 and even the new lower $2,440 mint price as predicted. At least a $200 loss after fees. And it still is priced too high for a common uncirculated and ungraded gold eagle.
