Got a new camera and working out the bugs from a new set up starting from scratch. GTG

I think the lighting is a little too harsh and will be adjusting with more lighting. 20MP down to 800px. Literally just picked up this camera today and these are the first shots from it. I'm happy with it, but the set up definitely needs tweaking quite a bit and not the quality I know I can get from this camera. Feel free to GTG.

Interesting toning on the 1833 half.

Good shots but the lighting is harsh in a few of the shots, I'm sure you will have it dialed in soon.

  • Kaz, it's a Canon sx540. 20.3MP. Not high end, but has 50x optical zoom and uploads the pics right to my Google drive. I figured I'd give this bridge camEra a run. The first shots came out pretty good. I'd like to see more detail very crisp in the Raw image, but overall, it's doing ok. I just have to find that balance of light and angles. My old fujifilm at 12mp at anaconda was sharper, but I haven't tweaked this set up yet.

I'd make each photo slightly smaller (and round). I'm not sure what setting is used yet the glare could also be toned down? Otherwise, nice!

  • Coinbuf, I totally agree. That's usually the result of lighting. I picked up 3 lamps at walmart but all they had were led lamps. I like my old crisp white lamps. These were shot using 3 diffused LED lamps. I don't like them as much as actual bulbs. Again, these are the first shots out of the camera so for that, they're pretty darn nice for getting started. I think I will be adding more lights to diffuse and add a consistency to the application of light to even out the hot spots. You can definitely see them on the wlh.

The photos are round. They're 1:1 I guess I could make them smaller, but I think it's the lighting hitting the angles too hard.

When you've used a set up for years, and then Dont have a camera or set up with lights anymore, you really do have to rebuild it from the bottom up. Trust me, Ill get it on point. ;)

LED's do have a tendency to be strong what I am doing with them is pointing the light away and slightly down from the coin and hanging a piece of paper in front of the light so that the light bounces off the paper to the coin for diffusing. This seems to work well for copper but have not found the sweet spot for bright silver yet.

If you polish away the scuffs on the reverse of the CBH you will get better images.

I am obviously not a photography expert... or even a qualified novice. I see amazing, incredible coin pictures and frankly cannot even think of ways they could be improved. So there, you have my worthless opinion... :D;) Well, not worthless in the praise part, they really are very, very nice pictures. Cheers, RickO

I belong in the same boat and agree that these are beautiful photos of beautiful coins. Thanks for sharing.

Great photos. I love the detail. Many times when photos are posted there is just a minute lack of detail around the devices but yours are spot on. Nice work.

I've been at numismatic photography for 15 years and I am always striving to improve the images. Can't stop learning on how to make images. Brandon was very good in the past, these are pretty good first runs with a new set up, I am sure he will pick up and get better quickly.
