Advice for a newbie(kinda)

I'm a relatively new collector of coins (at least on the higher end scale) I was thinking of selling my common date ms61 1886 eagle and using that money and some more to get a Au50-53 CC eagle. Good idea?

When a member asks a question like this, I become hesitant.... It is your collection, and your choice. If the CC Eagle is more important to you than the 1885, then go ahead... If not, find another way. Cheers, RickO
Why would you want to do that? If you don’t already have a very good answer, it might not be a good idea.

Too broad a question to answer.
General advice. There is quality at every grade (although I’d say that is rarer at MS61). Consolidate your cash to buy quality pieces vs spreading across several coins that might not measure up to a high standard. You’ll be happier in the long run.
Being able to recognize quality takes time and exposure. Everyone’s taste and discrimination evolves with experience. Purchasing from reputable dealers that focus on building quality inventory can accelerate your acquisition timeframe, but you’ll pay a premium. Nothing wrong with that since quality is rarely cheap and part of the freight paid is the dealer’s selection filter and gaining access to their inventory.

I'd sell that and a few more pieces, or save up and find a nice CC in 58. Most of the MS ones you are going to find are 61/62 anyway.
