Maximum Morgan Dollar weight tolerance

Hi,
I have a Morgan that I would probably put at AG3 or G04, which weights around 25.41g. I was wondering if that is in an exceptionable weight tolerance for silver loss? It's something I've had a really long time that I just came across. At most I may have paid around 17$ for it when I acquired it back around 2014.

26.73 +/- 0.097 grams when minted. Seems too light, even for a low grade. Could be struck on a thin planchet or could be a Chinese fake that was worn down to pass as genuine.

Can you post pictures? It does seem a bit light, but if there is excessive wear... well, pictures would help. Cheers, RickO

I think 5% loss is reasonable.

Once, out of curiosity, I weighed some groups of "slick" Morgan dollars and Barber silver coins before I sent them to the refiner, and the averaged about 7% light. So, figure that as the low end of genuine but very well worn coins.

  • A Morgan Dollar can weigh up to ±0.097 grams more or less than the standard 26.73 grams. The coin should weigh between 26.633 and 26.827 grams. Any weight within this range is acceptable. If the weight is significantly different, it might be worn, damaged, or a counterfeit coin. Use a precise scale to weigh a Morgan Dollar.

7% weight loss on truly worn US 90% sounds right..

    Thanks @CaptHenway

Dimes suffer the most. One day I fit 62 slick Barber dimes into a standard 50-coin plastic tube.

Coincidentally, three days ago I weighed a roll of early date, well-worn Mercury dimes and they were almost 7% light

I weighed a Peace dollar that was the pocket piece of a WWII vet who carried it all his life after it was gifted to him by his mother just before enlisting. The only design remnant still visible was part of 2 or 3 of the rays behind Liberty's head. It weighed a bit over 24g.
