Will PCGS Retain the Provenance?

keojkeoj Posts: 980 ✭✭✭

Looking for info. I have one last coin to complete a Registry.

I'll submit this as MPD variety (8 and 7 in the denticles). I've owned this coin for a long time. Like the coin, great strike and it was of of TDNs first coins as began his march towards assembling the best Trade Dollar set ever. The coin has one minor distraction, a carbon line on the reverse (rubber band). Coin is in a PCGS 63 holder and is label marked "Legend".

So, 2 questions:
1) Will PCGS retain the Legend provenance if it goes to a holder that is marked with the variety?
2) Will it regrade at a lower number during this process?

Thanks, Keoj

    I’d ask PCGS about the impact of attributing the variety, but I think the provenance would be good. The grade should not go lower. If you are having it regraded, you should at least get the current grade. Nice looking coin and cool variety, but in my book I would say the reverse suffers from more than a minor distraction.

    @keoj,

    Grade will not be lowered if submitted in the holder. The provenance will be retained if it is so marked on the submission form.

    BTW, I do not see both numbers in the denticles. I think I see only the 7.

    It appears to me, that the coin in the OP is a 1873 CC MPD VP-001, which is not listed in the CPG and would be attributed as a MPD "Minor Variety"

    Diagnostics

    The tops of errant numerals 87 are seen within the denticles below the date. This obverse is found paired with a reverse on which a die gouge runs through the D of DOLLAR.

    My best luck in areas like this is the email customer service and then call them referencing the email. Have them respond back to the email with clarification of what they will do. Then include that email in the submission.

    PCGS will not use NGC's VP numbers, as that is strictly NGC's system for cataloging varieties not in other standard references.

    Edit: No idea if this will be included in the CPG 6th edition Vol II when it comes out, although a different 73-CC MPD is already listed as FS-301. @Dentuck ?
