At my favorite B+M shop. I have a chance to pick up 3 Proof rolls of the Westward Jefferson's. One Bison, one Peace and one roll of the Keel boat. Don't know yet how much she wants for them? Should I? Very unusual, don't ya think? :*

    hmmm

    for a nickel a piece?

proofs didn't come in rolls. these have been pre-searched and the favorite shop is fishing for a sucker instead of just giving them out in change.

Yes, they are personally inserted rolls. Not looking for any varieties. Just thought to be quite unusual and cool.

Not unusual or cool. Spend your money on something else. Proof coins from those years are market dogs.

C'mon Joey, you are always looking for varieties. ;)

I couldn't get any value for them in holders (don't ask).
I ended up giving them (NGC holders) to the local YN program.

I'd skip the rolls of proofs, but any bags that come my way I snag.

I think i had a couple of the set's that came in plastic years ago with some nice toning. Everbody thought i gassed them meantime i found them in a 5 buck bin at a show lol.

Why would you want rolls of proof coins?

They surely get dinged being dropped into the tubes/rolls. And they've probably been manhandled, perhaps carelessly.

If you want modern proof coins just buy them in the original government packaging (OGP).

Rolls of proofs?? I would pass... Likely dinged up and obviously searched... No 70's for sure. Cheers, RickO

I would agree that you should not get them expecting to find 70's - too much potential for previous mishandling when they are in rolls. That being said, if they're cheap, why not? They could be interesting for reasons other than grade.

I've found new die crack and die gouge varieties while searching through modern proofs. This kind of die damage is rare on proofs, and therefore can turn a boring common-date into an interesting and valuable coin. Errors such as struck throughs can also be found on proofs. Tiny, lint-sized ones are not too uncommon, but find a major one and that would also be rare & valuable. Not every doubled die variety is known - there are new ones waiting to be found.

A major caveat - most of the time, you're not going to find anything interesting in a given roll of coins (proof or otherwise). It takes a lot of persistence and luck. For that reason, I'd only buy them if it was a good deal. So, if you really want them, do your homework and check the sold prices for Westward Jefferson proof rolls on eBay. Be armed with this information when you go into the shop. If the price is too high, try again next year - she'll probably still have them. ;)

I could see you having fun going through them and handling them out as change. If you can get them for 6-8¢ per then it seems fair to me.
