die crack/shattered die??

I know very little about shattered dies and die cracks.
Anybody out there care to comment on this Liberty Cap?
It looks to me like a crack running from the rim to the chin along the edge of the cap to the other rim.?
Comments / information appreciated. Jon

With that level of corrosion it’s hard to tell. It could just be something on the coin that caused it to corrode a bit more slowly in that area.
If there are no records of a big die crack in that location for that die variety, it probably is not one.

  • Where might one find information on die cracks for a 1795 Cohen 2 obverse? Thanks, Jon

I agree with @scubafuel ... Hard to determine specifically, though it does look like an old crack....Good luck with your research, let us know what you find. Cheers, RickO

  • I found from Breen's Half Cent book, that this obverse die was also used on the C3 and C4.
So unless the die was properly paired again, later on, to make this C2, it is probably not a crack, since the C3 and C4 do not have this crack.
I also just noticed that the thing that looks like a crack, extends around onto the edge of the coin.
    ??????? Ideas???
    Jon
