There is almost always a good reason why a coin is "under appreciated" or "undervalued". It's not an accident.

It's also not an accident when a coin goes from a couple dollars to a thousand dollars virtually overnight. I think the point of the thread is to suggest what coins might do this or which might go from a million dollars to two million in a short time.

I agree that there are no "accidents" but I do not believe any collectibles market has ever been "efficient" except for a few well known items with well known supply and demand. Much of the US and world coin markets are highly inefficient.

For undervalued classics I like XF/ AU liberty seated dimes. Quarters are too cheap as well but these are collectible by a lot of people at current prices and if they became popular prices could increase substantially. This dimes suffer from being small coins in an era of old eyes among collectors and by being too "rare" to collect.

Red chBU 2c pieces could be higher too. Liberty nickels are undervalued in better grades.

    1804 $10 Eagle........

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

This one. Worth $10M to me. I would be a buyer up to this level if I came into boo coo bucks...

Is this the one that is a part of the two coin set with the rfk commemorative dollar?

That set is sitting by my keyboard. Will submit it soon.

The 1971-S Type I Ike proof. Behind the rarity is a story that is unclear as to the origins. At some point, this coin will be recognized as one of the rarest 20th century proof coins. The number that exist might be in the range of 10 to 15.

I was hoping to place an image of the Type I reverse here from the 2013 Heritage auction...

I hope you win the lottery! It would be great to have a 2nd $10m coin! But would you pay $11m to have the most expensive coin?

I vote for the 1793 half cent made with 6.74 grams of copper.

I would pay $1M finder's fee so that would make my '94-S most expensive coin at $11M total.

    None.

"undervalued" suggests it should be selling at a higher price. The U.S. market is too big and active for anything to be below fair value.

Seems like the most undervalued pieces would be low mintage new US Mint issues. Theses are often selling for more than issue price on the secondary market, even before they are issued on the primary market!

New Dan Carr issues come to mind as well. As soon as a mintage closes, and sometimes earlier, prices go up.

Been thinking about this question for weeks.

    Several moderns I consider undervalued:

2015-W Roosevelt dime, silver proof (from the March of Dimes set), mintage 74,430, price about $35.

2017-S Enhanced Uncirculated set (10 coins), mintage 210,419, price about $24.

Multiple recent uncirculated S-mint ATB clad quarters, mintages around 900,000 each, price about 40 cents each.
