Are there other old fashioned tricks used to enhance or improve coins these days?

I'd think a toothpick would be gentler to dig crud out of the crevices of a copper coin.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

A lot of the techniques will be similar to those of cleaning ancient coins. This link has the best description for cleaning ancients and would apply to large cents as well.

Are goats still also used to clean ancient coins?
Run it over in a parking lot.
The word thorn prompted me to go check this shrub on my lawn.
The thorn is long ... very sharp and very soft.
Perfect for checking for plating blisters on zinc cents.
Porcupine quills - there's a guy on fleaBay sells them by the bag full.

I'm sure it's in the hawthorne family. I can tell you this for sure ... they are nasty.
You can pick your friends
And you can pick your nose
But you can't pick your friends nose
Can you pick your friend's large cent with a rose thorn?
Thorns from an agave plant.....much easier to hold than rose thorns.
Recommend treating with acetone or Blue Ribbon first, to remove as much as you can with that first. Any residual crud should be softened up for easier picking, using a thorn and holding & viewing the coin under a Mag light.
Or just buy nice slabbed coins that don’t need work:

I knew it would happen.
I use rose thorns a lot.
I have used those large thorns (@Jimnight post) before, and rose thorns. I like the big ones, easier to hold. Since I moved, I do not have access to one of those bushes now... Have to check around, they work well. Cheers, RickO
