Ever have luck with a lost or stolen report?

I was talking to a pawn shop owner about a $5 Indian that was pilfered locally; I asked if anyone ever got coins like this back? He said no. He said they all look alike to him. So if you file a police report they get records, and if you have a diligent cop on the case they may be able to get it back for you right?

Yes and No When my coins were pilfered they got about 80K worth of stuff. One of the known places where they were selling the stuff co-operated with the police and I was able to recover about 15K. Another place swapped out Jefferson Nickels for $5 gold pieces I got about 6 dollars in nickels. The third place said they didn't get anything and returned nothing. They were never prosecuted because the place that gave back the stuff didn't want to press charges.

I have heard of a few where coins were recovered.... Mostly, it seems, either not recovered or never reported that they were recovered. Cheers, RickO

A guy created a fake check and got me for 3 gold eagles. The law does nothing. Their teeth have no bite. Their reach is like that of an invalid or cripple. Criminals go largely unpunished. Karma is a bitch, though.

There is usually some remedy, it may involve hiring a private detective. Our local police are willing to file the paperwork to get people arrested on bad checks, helped me get my money out of a fraudster on the West coast. A guy I work with was the victim of a home invasion with his car stolen. He turned up the heat, had some contacts when he was in the military with the government. He found it being loaded on to a ship in NYC ready to be shipped offshore and he got it back. A moderator on Coin Talk got his stuff back too after a theft. Partly it depends on the thieves, how wily they are and how determined you are.

I would think detailed pictures of the high dollar items helps. Each coin is unique in terms of marks and blemishes etc. and with good pictures you'd easily be able to prove what was yours.

    Collector, occasional seller

I had all that, the local police are not skilled in getting all the records, if the gold buyers and pawnshops even provide those records to them. A pawn shop I spoke with said they enter the information in a national database.
