I've been looking at a lot of business strike 1866 Shield nickels, and saw this MS65 on coinfacts. Almost all of these are very poorly struck, but this one is hammered (comparatively). I don't own this coin, I just thought I'd share

Very nice. Interesting series
Sure looks like a Proof from cracked dies.
It looks Proof to me, too.

It is listed as MS and does lack the center dot in the 5 seen on Proofs. Not sure if all Proofs have the dot or not.

Whatever it is, it is very well struck for that issue.
I'll take the bottom part of the proof trifecta.
I guess it could be a mis-attributed proof.
I don’t know much about proof coinage from this time. During this time period, did they make proofs from just polishing up the business strike dies currently being used? Or did they actually crack a proof die from only minting 600 coins?

That is a really nice shield nickel...One I would consider if I saw it at a show...sure has the quality of a proof...Cheers, RickO
