Just bought a Walker that said it was damaged, but I think it’s a Blakesley effect. What say you?

Interesting. Too little metal flow and too much flow. And at directly opposite points? Something to study. I like your theory.

That’s Rim damage- not close to the Blakesley effect

One side is flat but the other is round so "Hit on opposite sides simultaneously" doesn't work.

No, no, no. For it to be Blakesley, there needs to be a clip or missing planchette material on the opposite side.

    That's the proverbial 'anvil' effect . . . . .

Who said that the two objects hitting the coin on opposite sides simultaneously were exactly the same?

On second look...the flat spot above the eagle looks like it was caused a hammer? Either way I never heard of the Blakesly effect before now. So thanks for the thought provoking post, headsplitter.

It looks like damage to me.... It appears the coin got jammed between to hard surfaces. Cheers, RickO

Blakeley occurs when an incomplete planchette gets stamped. It could be a clipped planchette, shorn off, whatever. What causes this is the lack of support on the OPPOSITE side of the coin.

    Here is a Kennedy half that exhibits Blakesley . . . . . .

The clip in front of Kennedy's nose causes an 'apparent' thickening of the rim on the opposite side. This will appear on both sides of the coin.

    Hope this helps.

I vote damaged. If that was a clip it is so small that the BE would not be that severe.

Not a clip, no Blakesly effect. Pmd most likely. Peace Roy

It is damage that dates from very early in a heavily circulated coin's life.

    Nope. Damage.

  • Thanks for all the answers. I didn't pay but $12.00 for it. Figured it was worth a shot.

Coin resting on I-beam. Hammer hits coin, beam pushes back on coin from impact. Two damaged areas 180 degrees apart.
