Laura Sperber...

cameonut2011cameonut2011 Posts: 10,181 ✭✭✭✭✭

Has anyone heard how she is doing? I know she posted she had surgery earlier this month. There are several major events (auctions, legendary coins, etc.) going to auction and yet she has been silent. I would usually expect at least a blog post or two about it. I hope all is well in Laura land. Feel free to PM me if more appropriate.

I understand the surgery was to remove a tumor from her spine, which had been a long-term source of pain only belatedly discovered. I assume her dialysis requirements and treatments continue.

TDN recently posted that her surgery was "uneventful", which sounded positive.

I think that was right after the surgery. It has been almost two weeks which in the post-surgical timeline is like a life time. Presumably she would be discharged by now either to her home or a rehabilitation hospital, which is why the silence is a bit concerning.

On the other hand, it could be good news. It could mean she is focusing on getting better and not the stresses of the coin business/market.

I don’t think things are great. I want her to hire a nurse to check on her once or twice a day

Perhaps we call all start a KickStarter campaign as I know many of us here would be more than happy to contribute the funds necessary for part-time health care personnel to check on her needs a couple of times per day.

If she refuses I've also heard good things about Apple's line of watches. It will detect if you fall or sustain a jarring injury and automatically alert EMS. Less likely an issue here, but it can also run EKG, detect arrhythmia, and the new one coming out tomorrow will have pulse oximeter built in. You can also send text messages from it. Obviously it is not good as a nurse, but it might be something Laura would be more likely to consider if she doesn't want to hire a nurse.

I certainly wish Laura the best.... Recovery from major surgery such as that can be both painful and slow. Cheers, RickO

Anytime you hear of spinal surgery, you know the recovery can be some time. Cutting through all your back muscle can be a painful healing.

Sorry to hear that your friend isn't well.

Everybody here has always spoken well of her and shared stories about her being a beautiful person. Always sounded like she had a solid crowd around her, and like you all had super great times together.

There's lifetimes of stories buried in the search engine here and you'll come across them time to time. Sorry to get sappy but, it really is beautiful.

Of all the ways to be remembered forever in the hobby you love, that's a pretty kickass one.

And hey guys please remember your mental health during lockdown. It's never been easier to talk to someone. A professional can help work through things that you might be overwhelmed with (and that's okay).

Some things are manageable in normal times but might not be right now, by no fault of your own, and reaching out is the first step in feeling better.

Experiencing our fragility often produces a revelation to appreciate life’s blessings. Here’s to her speedy recovery and for her to take time for herself and for those she loves.

Was hoping she would be feeling good enough to participate; be advising clients or at least follow and eventually comment on the Simpson and other sales as long as it is enjoyable and not stressing her health to do so.

Hope to later hear that is the case. If not able to do that, then at least focusing on her health to the full extent needed.

Hope she is heading for better times soon.

I hope for her continued improvement and am very saddened to hear of her health problems. She has been a very honest voice in numismatics,, many have waited with zeal for her thoughts on the coin market and individual coins. She is very intuitive and whenever I have been at the cac headquarters, her professional man is usually there for a submission. Laura is an invaluable asset in numismatics especially during these critical times.

Be careful. Some of mine have called me an idiot and, upon reflection and further study, I could not disagree.

Get well Laura sometimes we just need a little time to reflect in a crazy “Karen” world.
