Scratches, environmental damage?
Can you be more specific by looking at the true view pic?

Details for damage... are there rim issues? The piece looks somewhat misshapen.

No idea. A good example of why I rarely buy coins based on pictures.

I see obverse scratches 10-11 o'clock, not much else wrong with it.

Tough coin to find graded. Reverse looks ok. It would have to be on the obverse, top right or top left or maybe. It is a nice looking coin,
The scratches are between the rays at upper left. The lower obverse rim area has that matte burnt look of early stage corrosion. But as MrE said, pics can be deceiving.
The obverse looks fine, just no feathers on the eagle. On the reverse there are scratches parallel to the rays.
Whoops true. Not used to eagles on the obverse.
The obv graffiti.
But still a great great piece, I would have been very happy with her.:)
The scratches between 10 and 12 o'clock extending beyond the Rays prevents a straight grade

As far as I can tell it is the scratch/ graffiti between 10-12 extending beyond the rays
The patina and toning is excellent and original.

I like the look of the coin and even though the scratches happened years ago and are somewhat hidden by natural patina as time passed, they impact the grade. Details is the most accurate opinion and outcome that best describes the coin

I don’t care how rare it is. It doesn’t belong in your collection. Ditch it.
It’s rare
If I find another one I will let this one go

It’s not that it’s circulated that I don’t like it. I think your (circulated) 1837-CaAM is a nice coin.
The toning isn’t right. And it’s got a lot of little issues (staining, spotting, rim defects, planchet issues, scratching). The overall package doesn’t work (unlike the aforementioned 1837-CaAM)
There’s a 55 and a 58 in the NGC Census. Why not wait for one of those rather than jumping all over “cheap” crap from eBay?
The below coin is 100x nicer:
