I reread both author's foreward in REPPLADORES ( Mike Dunnigan and J.B. Parker )....those guys put "many years of research and handling" ,,,,,,of what went into their book before publishing.

And those years remain the foundation. Rarities and availability change. I’m good for a refresh.

This date really IS horribly executed. Truthfully, given the luster present (even though probably dipped at some point), the eBay coin is probably AU53 or better technically, wear-wise... but what a dog, esp. the cap side.

There are a variety of... best guesses/compromises with other graded examples.

For example, NGC called this 35 - actually a rather presentable example, but it's frankly overgraded, even for NGC. By wear, I'm seeing a 25 or so... could be gradeflation or(/and?) grading on a curve due to pretty good eye appeal:

PCGS called this example a 30:

This piece is certainly more poorly executed than the NGC35, but has MUCH less wear (look at the devices that ARE struck-up, plus hidden remaining luster beneath the thick original skin). It's technically a 45, maybe pushing 50, I'd say. Did they knowingly "net grade" it down... or did the typical poor strike and crusty tone simply fool the grader?

bidask's example at the top is a quite nice specimen overall - though I don't think the person who graded the PCGS30 linked above would have called it a 55.

How long would it take to get such a book on shelves and ready to sell? Is there lots that needs to be updated? Are there many new varieties? And has rarity changed for many coins or just a few?
