A Sterling... trash can?

Found this at a local thrift shop. Has anyone seen anything like this or have any idea what it might be from or for? A very strange thing to make out of sterling in my opinion.

It's a little too small for that... would be perfect for golf pencils though.

No lid unfortunately, I looked around for one at the store thinking the same thing.

Came here hoping to see a full sized sterling silver trash can with the thought of finding one to make my neighbors jealous.

yeah that's it! Interesting that one site has it as a cigarette holder and the other as a toothpick holder. Maybe I'll clean it up and use it as a shot glass
