GTG - New nickel purchase (opinion on upgrade?) - Grade Revealed

I am new to the forum and am glad to be here. I have read many posts and have learned a lot from everyone here - thank you!

Now to the question: I recently bought a few nickels to kickstart my FS Jefferson set - a few key dates. I anticipate this set taking many years to complete - but I look forward to the gradual completion of the set. I have a feeling the following one may upgrade a half grade. What would you grade this nickel? I am curious if more people submit the upgraded number than the current grade number based on the picture. I'll post the grade in the near future.

    MS66FS.

Jefferson Nickels from the Denver Mint prior to 1951 are noteworthy for some full, really hammered strikes. them boys at the Denver branch really knew how to run them presses?? this coin looks like one of that ilk, late MDS with an almost orange-peel look to the fields. I have had some mid-1950's Nickels where the affect was so pronounced that it covered parts of the portraits and gave the overall coin an almost matte-like appearance.

if I remember correctly from 15-20 years ago, 1947-D was one of the easier dates in Full Steps and rather common in 66FS. yours is a very nice coin.

Thanks for your input! Coincidentally, all of the most recent coins I have purchased slabbed have been pre-1951 from the Denver mint. They are probably the strongest strikes in my collection - but that's comparing them to others which I selected raw and subsequently had graded a few years ago before I knew much about selecting quality examples. Although, now that I think about it, my first two raws that were designated FS were a 1938-D MS66 (FS) and a 1941-D MS66 (FS). I think I need to diversify with the other Mints...

1941-D might represent the best struck Jefferson Nickels.

I started here in 2004 with a full step set of Jeffs myself. Welcome!
I concur with keets. MDS MS66FS Nice five stepper. If it is in a 65FS, don't chase the grade with more grading fees. Nice coin.

looks like a luster bomb. looks like it may be worth going after 67. (not that i do a lot of split-grading high-end FS jeffies) had to check the price guide to see where the splits on this one are.

    welcome to the forum

Nice coin. Great strike and looks lustrous. Reverse looks great. Obverse has quite a few small marks (hair, cheek and collar, fields look good). I think that could limit it.

@FS_Jeff.... Welcome aboard..... Looks like an MS66.....I have not collected Jefferson nickels, but they do make an attractive set in the upper grades. Good luck... Cheers, RickO

Great job ModCrewman. The grade is in fact 67 FS. Somewhat discouraged here by all of the 66 FS comments, lol. Now, upgrading seems out of the question. I do still think that the state of the above nickel looks more conserved than many of the other 67 FS TrueViews on Coinfacts - but may not be "the" 67 to seek the upgrade. In case your curious and do not want to look at the population report, there are only 39 graded 67, one graded 67+, and one graded 68.

mothra454 - CAC only applies to select key Jeff's and early proofs. Could look at QA though...

Just curious which service gave it the MS67 grade? When looking at huge dinner plate sized photos the marks will seem more exaggerated than when viewing in hand. That said I think your coin is maxed out due to the number of small nicks and ticks on both obv and rev. Really I think MS66 is the correct grade but the strong luster and good strike help push it up imo.

Ah thanks, my bad. Never heard of QA before, but I checked them out. Hopefully that's an option!

Nice observation. I totally agree with you.

The guy that runs QA is/was a member here, have not seen him post in quite some time so not sure if he is still active here. Good guy with a good rep from what I know but not (so far) the market power or desire that the bean has. I have one coin with the QA sticker but as I'm not a modern collector I have not looked into sending any coins to him.

Legit thought it was a MS64FS used to silver/gold. Plus im a noob. Chatter on cheeks threw me off.

Maybe the QA guy didn't want to have to deal with all the snarky comments he would get here lol. If the CAC sticker is the "green bean", what's the nickname for the QA sticker? The "silver surfboard"?
