If one was to spend $1000 -$1200 for a Mantle card, what are opinions on which way to go

55 Bowman. Best example you can find. Can get a nice 6.
Investment?
Probably needs to be very high grade. So, go for the highest grade base card you can get from 1960’s Topps - probably a higher grade from ‘65-69 would work. I would target PSA 8.5 or better.
More for enjoyment?
Pick the card you like best from the Toppsrun. For me, as a huge Mantle fan, I’d say a ‘53 in a grade of 2-3 is around your range or maybe a nice PSA 5ish ‘56?
These two hit both points but will not be high grade which caps their ability to explode somewhat.
Curious about the rare, mysterious and beautiful 1951 Wheaties Premium Photos?

I’d stick with his base Topps or Bowman cards from his playing days. Those are the blue chips of the hobby. Looks like you could grab a ‘57 in 6 for right about a grand, a ‘56 in 4 for just a bit more. A ‘61 in 7 is within your range and as Mickey71 said the 55 Bowman in 6 would be a fine choice. Good luck!
i like Mantle cards that might have a chance for a bump higher that's why you should go for a .5 card at that price range. Either a 1964 Topps 7.5 for about $1200 or a 1968 Topps 8.5 for about $1600.
I’ve asked these same questions before and received sound advice.
IMHO, not a Mick expert, I would go with most centered you can find. Likely 5 or 5.5. It’s just a beautiful card. But, one that will also likely appreciate.

best centered '69 wl you can find.
You could get a 1958-1962 PSA 8 all star card of his. The '62 might be around $1200 but the others go for $1K or less. They're very attractive cards and are high numbers to boot.
Centered 1958 psa 6
Centered 1959 Topps with clear registry and some gloss (those low numbers don’t have great gloss tho). PSA 6 to 6.5 if you shop around.

Go for a high grade All star card. They seem well priced Vs regular issues.
Example, This one was a make offer 1450. So it probably went for 1200

Thanks for all of your opinions for my Mantle. I have purchased a PSA 6 55 Bowman. Thanks to board member Cpettimd!
Some people argue that is not actually a photo of Mantle on the '55 Bowman.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
Who do they argue it is?
55 bowman is a nice card. Great deal in a PSA 6!
Great choice. One of my favorites. Enjoy the vintage Mantle.
Nice. Congrats!

Let's see it!
Guessing it's this one: https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1041968/psa-mantle-73-schmidt-1960-clemente#latest
Nice detective work!
Love the 55 Bowman!!!
LarkinCollector, Great work. That is the one!! Thanks for posting the link. His pictures are a lot better than mine would have been.
Thanks for the info. I have heard people mention it may not be Mantle but never knew who they thought it was. Usually a card with the wrong person on it is well known and definitive. I would think if Mantle didn’t think it was him on the card he would have said something about it. Seems like he would like the fact that just his name on a mislabeled picture makes it worth thousands.
LOL!!!! I wish it were worth thousands!
I have heard people joke that it’s not Mantle on the card, but it absolutely is. There is however an uncorrected error on the back, it says The Mick’s birthday was 10/30 instead of 10/20.
Snuffy last played for the Yanks in 1950 and played his last MLB game in 1952. Hard to believe that’s him.
I did double check my recollection on those dates and fell down an internet rabbit hole. Seems Stuffy died in a tragic train accident and the cause was never determined.
