It's a copper cent, what kind of layer are you referring to? It's not a zinc/plated cent.

Its a die break on the wheat stalk.
Die chips. Common on wheats.
thanks jbk. It was a little light on the showing of it! didnt know it was considered a die chip
die break,die chip. Same?
I was referring to the light layer. It's taken a little dip. meaning a layer was missing. I sure u know I'm very new to this great hobbie AuandAG. Thats why I asked.
Aaah, I see it now. Yes, die chip. Breaks are long and chips are like yours.

I'm still confused! lol...... I know what a die crack/break. Die chip. I have looked at alot of Nickels and pennies. I'm just trying to get clarification on it. If you know what I mean. I dont see a chip, break. Apparently I need to learn a bit more. Haha! Thanks for understanding. I Just see a layer of copper than another one on top? My first! And I have searched 100,000 of pennies.
As I was looking at it! A Die break would cause this! oh my lol! Shits and giggles!
i'd say not really. chips usually have non-linear contours whereas breaks are lines, even if crooked/serpentine or some other irregular continuation.
cracks/chips/breaks can and often do overlap and/or connect.

I think of a die chip as a piece of the die's surface chipping away. A die break is a deep crack in the die, or a large piece breaking off, such as with a die crack or a cud.
Looks like a die crack too me.
There is a lot of wear and some PMD in the area... so really difficult to tell if it is a worn die crack or a worn, large die chip....It is raised, and of course there is the rim hit right next to it...Cheers, RickO
