Question on Members only Show Bellagio

So I just got an Email from PCGS about their upcoming members only shows in Vegas.

I’m considering going to the 9/15 show at Bellagio. Never been to a Show in Vegas.

I’ve done the Math.
SouthWest flight Roundtrip $217 ~ only $17 if I sign up for their credit card

2 night Bellagio Stay, $258 includes $75 daily meal credit

I have about 60 Coins to be graded between myself and about 5 other guys. Would it be wrong of me to charge them shipping if I end up going to the show for the on~site grading? I would think they would be happy with the 2 day turnaround time 😉

Not trying to be a cheapskate, just legitimately thinking it would be cheaper and faster to fly the coins their myself and have a good time.

Thoughts?

You can determine what is best with respect to shipping, but do you have the insurance coverage to carry that many coins for other folks? If not, and if something bad happens, shipping expenses might be the least of your concern.

    Thanks Tom,
    Always Wise and Level Headed.

The aspect of insurance and stewarding other people’s property on a trip like that hadn’t crossed my mind, and the more I think about it the more it sounds like a bad idea.

Think I might still go, just my lady friend and myself

How are these Member only shows? Do dealers setup or is it more of PCGS Booths?

Dealers do set up.....Legend auctions....great food provided by PCGS ....The Belagio is first class for sure and you and your lady friend will enjoy a beautiful resort. It's quaint as far as shows go but the material is wonderful to search through and view.
Oh, did I mention I live in Las Vegas? A bit biased for sure. Love my town.

I have never been but in the past I have read that there are dealers there, less than a big show but a good turnout. If I recall correctly the reports on the last Vegas show were rather lackluster due to concerns of the virus and both dealer and public participation was low. No way to know in advance if that will be the case again or not, if you do go please give us a show report.

Related question: What’s the turnaround time for onsite grading at these shows?

    Thanks,

Turnaround times are great. Drop off on you first day and pick up next, usually.

For those coming, Las Vegas is the home of Allegiant Air and they are pretty damn cheap if they fly out of an airport near you. They fly out of a lot of smaller towns...worth a check.

    My $.02:

Get a backpack with a lock. Put the coins in a few PCGS boxes and run (packing) tape over the top of the slabs so they don't rattle. Put the coins in the backpack, lock it, and don't let it leave your person. Wear casual clothes, relax, and no one will likely suspect you have valuables on your person. The biggest hassle you're likely to have is going through airport security with the coins, but allow 5-10 minutes in case they search the backpack manually.

I don't think it's unreasonable to charge your friends what shipping normally would have cost as a way to help defray your travel expenses. As you say, they'll be getting expedited service for the standard price. OTOH, depending on the coins, you may be paying PCGS a fair bit more for show grading than if you just used a lower tier and had the coins mailed back afterwards.

Just a thought re; Tom's caveat...if you bring other coins have a written agreement in the event of problems & have them check their homeowners policy & check your own too. You really are in a 'everything to loose & nothing to gain' situation.
If you are providing a service, you may not be protected.

    Have a nice day

The idea sounded good at the moment, I even considered mailing the coins to the Bellagio! But on paper I don’t like the ideas anymore. And like you said, too much downside for the upside. Most of the coins would be in the $100-$500 range, so I could potentially have 30K worth of coins on me. I know dealers do this all the time, but I would rather let the other guys sweat out a submission, than have a problem and have to explain.

I’m about 75% sure I’m going to go, so I will post Pics/Report next month.

Are show submissions more expensive than mail submissions? 2 day turnaround sounds awesome.

Generally much more. I don’t know what the going rate is these days.

    This is a dealer show.

In the best of times there are generally less then 30 tables. Some dealers don’t display coins. I’m guessing there are a lot less tables now. Just putting it out there. Ive enjoyed the intimacy of these shows in the past. You can cover the floor in 30 minutes or less. I go to catch up with dealer friends. Most dealers go to submit coins, socialize and conduct dealer to dealer business. There have been many times when I was the only collector on the floor.

Edited to add a lot of dealers bring limited inventory. So if you are going to see a dealer that has an online presence and your interested in something particular ask them to bring it.

The Legend Auctions are fun to sit in on and participate. Lot viewing is always cool.

Show economy is about 70 bucks each with a 5 coin minimum so you bet it costs more. Sometimes i pay up anyway if I have money to burn and want to see grades faster than current “Noah’s ark” economy.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.
  • To save you the time in researching.. I am a dealer who sets up at the PCGS MOS shows each time. Show Econ costs $65/coin. $5 additional per coin for gold shield. Each submission carries a $10 handling fee, there’s no way around this. Max coin value is $2,500 per coin under show Econ.
Show regular: $150/coin. Comes with gold shield. $10 handling fee per each submission.

I support pcgs fully. At the same time, you’d be stupid to spend $70/coin just to grade a bunch of $100-500 coins.

  • By the way, I fully recommend coming to the show. It’s always phenomenal. Pcgs is a great host. They serve breakfast and lunch, along with some sweets. All of which is complimentary. It’s great to socialize and buy/sell coins.
